‘“Lucky to Be Alive” – Galway Girls Survive Night at Sea’
A near tragedy turned into an amazing story of survival and rescue today when two young Galway women missing overnight off the Galway/Clare coast were found by a father-and-son team. The cousins, Sara Feeney (23) and Ellen Glynn (17), were reported missing on Wednesday evening by Ms Feeney’s mother. Having entered the water on paddleboards at 9 p.m. on the warm summer’s evening, they failed to return. The Coastguard was immediately alerted and a huge search and rescue operation was launched.
The girls’ ordeal started when they drifted far from shore due to high winds. The weather turned particularly bad, with heavy rain and huge waves. Having tied their boards together, the girls took turns to briefl y fall asleep while they tried to withstand large waves crashing over them. When the sun rose, they realised they had drifted near the Cliff s of Moher. The girls were particularly worried that they might be dragged out into the Atlantic Ocean, which would decrease their chances of being rescued.
