An important part of advertising is using emotive language like buzzwords to get people’s attention and make them choose with their heart rather than their head. In earlier collections you examined emotive and persuasive language. You will now read a poem about a rather nasty place and then put your persuasive skills to the test.

What I will learn:
to speak persuasively
Working with a classmate, read these adjectives and see if you can come up with places to associate with each one.

‘The Mewlips’ BY J. R. R. TOLKIEN
The Shadows where the Mewlips dwell Are dark and wet as ink,
And slow and softly rings their bell, As in the slime you sink.
You sink into the slime, who dare To knock upon their door,
While down the grinning gargoyles stare And noisome waters pour.
Beside the rotting river-strand The drooping willows weep,
And gloomily the gorcrows stand Croaking in their sleep.
