The boy who wrote this letter is now a Professor of Tissue Engineering. He was part of a medical team that used stem cells to grow an artifi cial windpipe and implant it in a patient, saving her life. This was an amazing surgical breakthrough that made world headlines.
Recently, talking about the letter and Biddy Baxter’s reply to him, Anthony said that if they had ‘failed to reply, or had treated my letter as a joke (as perhaps others might have done) it could well have altered the course of my life.’
