The Nazi offi cer says, ‘Attention! Is there any Italian here who speaks German?’ In his speech, he tells the new prisoners:
❍ why they are here ❍ the three most important camp rules ❍ the penalties for anyone who breaks the rules ❍ the things they must and must not do ❍ why they should be afraid.
1. Put yourself in the shoes of the Nazi camp offi cer. Write a paragraph from the real speech you think he made. Remember the RAFT technique.
2. Imagine you are the actor playing this camp offi cer. Perform the paragraph you wrote. Read the performance tips to help you.
PERFORMANCE TIPS
The fi lm director and the actor will have worked together to make sure that this was a powerful moment so use what you see in the fi lm clip.
❍ Closely examine the Nazi offi cer’s posture – the way he stands.
❍ Take note of his gestures – how he uses or holds his hands and his arm movements.
❍ Notice his tone of voice – how he speaks to the prisoners.
❍ Look closely at his facial expressions – the way his eyes survey the room.
❍ Finally, look at the way he leaves abruptly, with no consideration whatsoever for the prisoners.
