DEVON RUM COMPANY “N
o, launching a new artisan spirits company on Friday 13th
March 2020 was not
the greatest timing ... but perhaps what happened a week later did us a favour.” Dave Seear, founder of Devon
Rum Company, explained, “We needed to rethink our carefully made plans for marketing our two wonderfully smooth craft rums to pubs, restaurants, hotels, etc. So, we talked to farm shops, delis, independent specialist food and drink retailers and suppliers and, thankfully, there was an incredible take up from that sector which shows no sign of abating.” Shop Local isn’t just a slogan here in the south west but a way of life we have been practising for very many years before it became fashionable and never was that more

obvious than during lockdowns when what had been a preference for some became the norm for many – and those habits appear to be here to stay. “We always knew there would be three distinct markets for Devon Rum – on sales within the hospitality trade, off sales through retail outlets and online sales direct to customers. Obviously, the latter two are what kept us going through those ‘dry’ months and I am delighted that we have over 150 outlets across the south west where you can buy our rums; we are sending bottles all around the country to fulfil
customers’ orders – plus you can now find us in your favourite hostelry!” So, what makes Devon Rum – and indeed,
Devon Rum Company – so special? “We work with world renowned Caribbean
partners in Jamaica and Guyana who have been honing their rum distilling and blending skills for centuries, so we start with the highest quality base product. We import that as an 80% proof spirit which we then reduce to drinking strength (37.5-40% ABV) by the addition of local Devonia Spring Water – and then the magic happens here in Devon!” Flavourings of spices and citrus fruits to
their own unique recipes are added and the spirit sits and steeps in vats until reaching the desired results – results which have seen both their Premium and Honey Spiced Rums win Taste of the West Gold awards. And for those who noticed the word ‘Honey’, this essential ingredient is courtesy of another local specialist producer, Quince Honey Farm
