28 Who are Home Instead?

Martin and Anne-Marie Allison are Directors of the local branch of award winning home care provider, Home Instead, delivering highly personalised, quality care to older people in their own homes in and around Kingsbridge, Ivybridge, Modbury and the South Hams.

H

ome Instead is the largest homecare franchise in the world, caring for over 90,000

clients globally every day. We own and run the Ivybridge Kingsbridge and South Hams franchise and have done so since August 2019. It was our own experience of care for our parents that inspired us to start our own company and make a difference in the care world. As we age, most of us would prefer to stay as independent as possible and remain in our own homes surrounded by our own personal belongings and memories - our aim at Home Instead is to provide support to help people do just that! We can’t plan for the time when our body doesn’t behave itself anymore and our brain starts forgetting. We all hope that we can continue living independently, with family and friends close by and actively participating in the world around us. The reality is, we just don’t know

what’s around the corner tomorrow or in thirty years’ time. We do know that, as we age, our lives change, our circle of friends gets smaller and our ability to keep up with the pace of life gets harder. As a company, we have grown

to understand the needs of our clients and know that often the little things can cause the most anxiety. Daily household tasks can become problematic; keeping on top of appointments, shopping, cooking and even getting up in the mornings, for some, can be a

struggle without help. As well as physical struggles,

many clients who are able to remain independent at home may feel lonely. You only need to pick up a newspaper to read that loneliness and isolation is considered as dangerous to someone’s health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. We always look at care from two perspectives – the Client and the CAREGiver. To care for someone in

their own home needs dedication, compassion, consideration, empathy and trust! The CAREGivers also need to be respected and cared for themselves. Caring for someone else is a challenging role. All our Caregivers who come

through our rigorous recruitment process share common values. We train them and support them to provide the highest possible quality care they can, but it has to start from within. You can’t teach someone to care. They have to have that inside them already. We put ourselves in the shoes of our clients every day. We understand how hard it is to accept care and even harder to admit you are lonely. Starting small and introducing

someone for a few hours a week, before a crisis hits, is the best way to begin the journey of being cared for. Our system of matching our CAREGivers with clients, looking carefully at who would be the best fit for ‘Mum’ or ‘Dad’, be it a cultural fit or sharing similar hobbies or life experiences, can make such a difference to care and support being accepted. As we head into our second

year we are working closer than ever with our CAREGivers to really understand what personalised care looks like. We develop a close relationship with our clients and their families so that we have a good understanding of their unique needs, of their likes and dislikes, their preferences and choices. We offer them a tailor- made service so that they can lead fulfilling, happy and purposeful lives. Our mission for the future is

to shout from the rooftops that every single older person in our community needs to be cared for with the same love and devotion we would care for our own parents. We need to ensure that they have a full and active life, whatever their age and circumstances and we at Home Instead will do all that we can to make that happen!
