e-test by By The Dart “There’s no way I can cycle up there!” My wife was initially very un-impressed by my bravado early into our e-test on Dartmoor on a warm, sunny September day. We had borrowed a couple of e-mountain bikes from e-Xplore Devon for a ‘gentle’ exploration of Dartmoor’s roads. It’s fair to say that my wife has had little experience of cycling since childhood and only brief experience of e-bikes. She’s previously been unenthusiastic about cycling of any sort around the hills and valleys of South Devon so our trial of these e-bikes was an important test. Although getting used to the mountain bike saddles took some time (we should have taken up the offer of comfort saddles!), we spent a very pleasant and easy 3-4 hours on Dartmoor. Actually, we took in much more of the scenery and beauty of the moors then had we been in a car. Faced with a 1:5 incline up a typically steep Dartmoor hill, at first, seemed daunting but by selecting a low gear and maximum e-assist and we were soon both amazed at the speed and ease with which we quickly got to the top. And that’s the point of e-bikes – they still offer great exercise especially in this area of the country (fresh air, great scenery etc) but it’s so much easier to ride further and for longer. You don’t have to be super-fit to have an exhilarating few hours fully exploring all that South Devon has to offer and not worry about getting up hills or covering a decent distance, all within the capabilities of most of us. And if you can’t justify the expense of buying your own e-bike, then hiring one from e-Xplore Devon for a day-out by yourself, a couple or even with the family, is fun, easy and affordable. Andy and Karl are extremely helpful to get you set up and off cycling quickly and efficiently with everything you need.
