take them on because he likes a challenge, but I can also do some of that technical work.

What is special about your work? Ford: I take my craft as a Goldsmith very seriously. Goldsmiths have served communities for thousands of years and I’m proud to be part of that tradition. Sadly, today the process has become so commercialised and we’ve lost so much of the meaning behind the object. We provide the alternative

that tell people’s stories. When somebody is commissioning a piece but they’re not sure what they want you have to get to know them, to try and eek out what it is they are not even aware of they like.

Isabella: Sometimes men come in and say they just want a plain wedding ring. It can be an uninformed decision - they don’t know what they can have so they think ‘I’ll just have a plain ring’. But we show them alternatives which they love, and they end up with something unique and special to them. I always say, and it sounds stupid, but I never make people’s wedding rings when I’m feeling cross because all that bad energy is going into the rings - you’ve got to be thinking nice thoughts when you are making people’s wedding rings!

Also, all of our gold and

gemstones are ethically sourced; we use either recycled or Fairtrade and fair-mined metal.

for three years. Then we have our make your

own wedding ring days, and we have just started offering a make your own gold ring day. I love teaching those courses.

Ford: Bella has a really nice way of teaching complete novices who are terrified but who, by the end of the day, have made a piece that really means something to them.

Is the majority of your work commissioned? Isabella: No, our work is divided into four sections. As well as traditional, bespoke jewellery work we do remodelling work. And we have all of our online sales, plus an online section of mapped wedding rings that show the exact time, date and location of the proposal. They are all handmade and laser engraved by Jo, our studio manager, who has worked with us

How affordable are your pieces? Isabella: As Goldsmiths, we are really keen to make our own beautiful, one off, quite labour- intensive pieces for the shop, that we hope people will fall in love with. But we also don’t want to be thought of as too expensive. A lot of our online orders are made from casts which requires less hand work, so the price point is a little bit more comfortable. If your budget allows it then obviously we recommend 18 carat gold but, if it doesn’t, there are lots of other options that, as Goldsmiths, we can facilitate.
