nearly half that time and also on limited opening for a further part of it. The Flavel is a charity managed by a board of Trustees

and relies heavily on ticket sales, Flavel Friends and volunteers to keep it running. Through lockdown, the Flavel was aided by some government grants and a couple of successful bids to external grant awarding bodies. However, the grant support has now ended and many of our long serving volunteers, for a wide variety of reasons, are unable to help any longer, so we are actively seeking more volunteers. The Flavel has a new Chair of

Trustees in Ann Green who was elected in February and despite being aware of the challenges that the Flavel now faces, she is looking forward to being able to build upon the prudent management by the Trustees. Peter Conisbee, the previous Chair, led the Flavel through the most difficult times and it is

a tribute to him, the Trustees, staff, volunteers and our supporters that we have fully opened again. At the Flavel you will find a full and varied programme

of films, live events, children’s workshops and much more. The café has reopened, with a new look and vibe but a no frills name; ‘The Flavel Café’, it says who we are! The café is open from Wednesday to Saturday and is being run by the Flavel for the Flavel, so you are assured a warm welcome from our staff and volunteers. Though the Flavel has to stand alone as a business

to survive, we can never lose sight of the aims, place in the community and the goodwill of so many that ensure it thrives, prospers and carries forward the vision of the founders. To do this, we will continue to look outwards, engage with our community and build upon our partnerships. We would particularly welcome new volunteers and

also have a couple of Trustee vacancies at the moment. Volunteers will be offered training and support, with a range of roles to choose from which include bar, café, auditorium and box office support. If you have particular expertise we will also try to match this to the range of opportunities we have to strengthen our core business. Do contact the Flavel to find out more. We need more volunteers, so please contact us; we would love to hear from you. Make sure The Flavel is on your radar! volunteering@theflavel.org.uk

One of our new auditorium volunteers recently put her thoughts into words, see what Karen had to say about supporting the Flavel –

“I have been coming to Dartmouth for holidays for the last 30 years, however The Flavel for one reason or another was never on my radar until I moved to Dartmouth 3 years ago and started becoming a regular moviegoer. I enjoyed my visits to

The Flavel so much that I started volunteering as an auditorium steward in October 2021. In comparison to a lot of volunteers I am a newbie, however, I already feel very much part of The Flavel family and look forward to my volunteering sessions. Each month I receive a rota and put my name forward for any

matinee or evening performances I am able to cover. These will include films, live comedy evenings, live music and sporting events. I recently stewarded at the latest Comedy Network which was a live

show comprising of 3 comedy acts. I walked into the warm reception area and was greeted with a big smile and a thank you for coming in. I signed in and collected my name badge and torch. I caught up with the box office volunteers and the staff that were around before going up to check the auditorium to ensure it was clean and tidy. The night was quite busy as the Comedy shows are popular. As visitors arrived I ensured they knew they could purchase drinks and refreshments at the bar and could take them into the auditorium. There was a really good atmosphere and everyone was looking forward to the show starting. I stood at

the entrance to the auditorium, checked visitors in and exchanged a few pleasantries. When the show was due to start I closed the doors and took my seat, looking forward to watching the show myself. At the end of the evening I opened the doors and had lots of laughs discussing the show as visitors left. When everyone had gone I went home with a big smile on my face. If you want to make friends, be part of a fantastic team, see some

great shows, watch the latest films and help support a vital arts centre in Dartmouth, then the Flavel is for you.”
