HERE ARE 10 THINGS TO DO THIS SUMMER IN AND AROUND DARTMOUTH AND SOUTH DEVON - 20 MORE TO COME IN OUR JULY & AUGUST ISSUES!

1

Dance on the beach at Tunes on the Sands at Blackpool Sands – from July 10 to 12. This new festival has an impressive

line-up of music over three days, including Boney M, Sugarhill Gang and The Hoosiers. There are also art installations on the beach, a silent disco, a gin terrace and cocktail bar. Blackpool Sands provides a spectacular backdrop of scenic woods and coastline to kick back and enjoy the atmosphere. Day and weekend tickets are now on sale, and for the full festival experience camping and glamping facilities are also available for the weekend. www.tunesonthesands.com

Start Point Lighthouse, on the most southerly tip of Devon and overlooking the busiest shipping lanes in the world, is opening up again for visitors on guided tours this

summer. At the end of the Start Bay headland, it’s been guiding vessels along the English Channel for more than 170 years. It’s also the only lighthouse open to the public in Devon so well worth a look. The walk down from the car park and around the coastal path is one of the most beautiful and rugged walks in the county. Along the coast below you can spot sea birds, migrants, birds of prey, seals and even dolphins. Complete your visit with a picnic on the lovely Mattiscombe Beach. Prawle Fair is back! On Saturday June 4 the village green will go back in time again – with traditional fairground entertainment including swingboats, coconut shie, skittles, tombola, ‘test your strength’ machine and chucking wet

sponges at the local South Hams Councillor in the stocks! The fair kicks off at 2pm with the legendary ‘raising of the glove’ ceremony, which signifies free trade and clemency at the fair. There’s also a children’s fancy dress and knobbly knees and ‘andsome ankles competitions, Maypole Dancing and a slippery pole to tackle. And in the evening the fun moves from the green to the Pigs Nose Inn with the official Prawle Fair After Party featuring

and their unique blend of folk rock, pop, gypsy jazz, and bluegrass. www.prawlefair.co.uk
