Azzopardi (local garden contractor and veteran of the Queen’s Regiment – featured in the July 2019 issue of By The Dart) is participating in the Race to the Sun challenge in mid May raising funds for Alabar’s Homes for Veterans. It’s a stunning cycling challenge amid the Andalusian mountains in Spain starting and ending at the towering rock synonymous with Gibraltar, raising funds for socially excluded and homeless Veterans. This circular challenge of 487km over 5 days, sees riders take on Cat 1 ascents totalling a breath-taking 8,600m through the glorious mountains of Andalucía, Southern Spain. The bespoke route starts in Gibraltar, takes on the Andalucía mountain range before returning once more to the towering rock synonymous with Gibraltar. Ken Hames, former British Special Air Service officer and

Ambassador to Alabar’s Homes for Veterans, leads this in- credible cycling adventure. In addition to the challenging ride, once in Gibraltar 12 participants are sought to go up against the Gibraltar Regiment for a tug of war and similar deeds of strength and teamwork. Alabar support over

currently pledged on the Race to the Sun 2022 Just Giving page – more information at https://www.justgiving. com/campaign/racetothesun Next, Kit Noble, not satisfied with cycling by electric bike with friend Piers Ballard from John O’Groats to Lands End in 2020 (see By The Dart feature October 2020) has decided to set off later this month by sailing around it! – or rather a large part of it from Dart- mouth to Troon. His Sail Round Britain challenge is again raising funds for the Cure Parkinsons charity, from which Kit suffers. Joining fellow mariner David Temple, whose wife has advanced Parkinsons, the two intrepid sailors, plus one other, are sailing off in a 34’ yacht ‘Second Wind’. Kit’s previous Jogle challenge raised over £7,000 for chari- ties fighting Parkinsons and heart disease and the present challenge is on track to surpass that.
