Dartmouth Youth Club A
by Ben Cooper
t the end of last summer Liz (Moseley) approached me
and asked if I would help set up a new, local youth group aimed at 11 to 18 year olds in town and I jumped at the opportunity. She pulled together a great team of volunteers and so Dartmouth Youth Group (DYG) was born. We have had some very
generous offers of support, with local individuals and organisations giving us donations to help get us going and we hope we have started something which can really help. The last two years have been difficult for everyone, but the impact on the younger generation is going to be the longest lasting and we are aiming to mitigate this and make Dartmouth an even better place to grow up in. Dartmouth should be a great
place to bring up children with the river, beaches and Dartmoor all on our doorstep. Yet for far too many and for whatever reason these are often inaccessible. We want to offer all our young people opportunities to go
kayaking, spend time on the moors as well as providing them somewhere out of school where they can safely hang out. Most importantly we want to keep it free. We launched with a monthly
Roller Disco at Dartmouth Leisure Centre which now welcomes over 80 children every month. We also host a weekly Youth Night @ Ivy Lane in town. Here we have pool tables, table football and other games which can be played whilst enjoying a free snack as well as somewhere safe to be.
“The last two years have been difficult for everyone, but the impact on the
younger generation is going to be the longest lasting”
This summer we hope to offer some trips out of town as well as activities on the water. We welcome suggestions - especially from those aged 11 to 18 who will benefit most - and again we want to take away any hurdles and offer these opportunities at no cost.
If you are interested in supporting or volunteering please email me at dartmouthyouthgroup@gmail. com
Details of the youth nights are published on our social media. At the moment, our Youth Night @ Ivy Lane is every Tuesday evening from 6.30pm - 8.15pm and then every second Friday of the month we host a Roller Disco at the Leisure Centre. Every fourth Friday we plan to host a Basketball session.
