went all the way to the top! Recognition for his skills and expertise across a
broad spectrum of supremely intense tests and trials came with his Winner’s Trophy, a major cash prize from Aftermarket plus specialist tools and training from the competition’s various sponsors including Snap-On, VARTA, TechMan, Motul, Philips and LKQ Euro Car Parts. Kevin explained, “The majority of entrants are
garage owners themselves or mechanics employed by main dealerships; there aren’t too many of us who are employees from the independent sector because there is a very considerable commitment required in terms of time, both for workshop practice and studying. I am hugely grateful for all the patience, understanding and encouragement shown by my employer Ian Gobel, owner of FRL Auto Services, who has supported me over the years. Without that backing, I could not have entered, let alone won!” Kevin’s staunchest champions are the FRL team who
are immensely proud of what he has achieved and, of course, wife of 33 years, Tracy whose faith in Kevin has never wavered. “It was wonderful to have her at my side to share in
my success when the results were announced, and my name went up in lights. I owe so much to her, and I am so happy that her belief in me has been rewarded. There are so many people I need to thank for so many reasons but Tracy, most of all.” Winning Top Technician most
definitely does not come easy! Besides motor vehicles, entrants may face working on jet skis, tractors or lawnmowers; in fault finding sessions when concentration is critical, they are bombarded with multiple questions and interruptions; both engineering ability and customer facing skills explaining ‘why, what and how’ are put to the test; and the depth of their knowledge and understanding assessed by the preparation and delivery of training presentations … not for the faint hearted.
