Monday talks: Geri Parlby talked on October 11th
about medicine
in art through the ages; she was extremely well received. By the time this reaches you Christopher Chanter will have spoken about the poet John Betjemen by taking us on a journey through the poet’s favourite places. In December (13th
) Claire Ford-
Wilkes is to deliver a talk entitled ‘The Mirror of Reality’ which is about Flemish painting from Van Eyck to Breughel. The fabulous artworks are shown with information about the historical and economic background surrounding them. In January (10th
) Angela Findlay’s talk is ‘Art
Behind Bars’ – the role of the artist in breaking the cycle of crime, prison and re-offending. The success of art in breaking this unfortunate cycle must surely be of interest to us all. If you would like to attend any of these talks, get in touch with either Penny Jolly on 07484 150257 or Jan Trevorrow on 01803 752928 to book a place. If all else fails just turn up at The Flavel at 2:15pm on the second Monday of the month for a delightful and informative
experience. Since the cost of speakers has now become £400- 475, and since The Flavel has now had to increase its room charges, the cost to visitors to the Arts Society is now £10, but it is well worth it.
Remembrance This year’s Remembrance Service
was held at St Thomas’s parish church on Sunday November 14th
.
Members of the community and representatives from BRNC were among those who attended. Two year six pupils from Kingswear Primary school attended, placing a poppy for each member of the village lost in service.
Community Pantry A reminder that the community
pantry is filled weekly at the church on Wednesdays of each week. Donations for this are always very welcome.
News from Kingswear Primary It has been a busy term at school, with lots of learning in the
classrooms and up at Forest School at Fountain Violet Farm. We have enjoyed being part of the wider community again, performing at the church for our Harvest Festival. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate with parents and members of the church community. We are now looking ahead to Christmas celebrations: we will be singing at the Royal Dart Yacht Club Christmas Fayre on Saturday 4th December - please come along to see our performance at 2.30pm. We are also performing a Nativity - A Midwife Crisis - at the village hall and taking part in a Christingle Service on the last day of term. As in previous years, we will be thinking about the act of
giving as well as receiving during advent, and bringing in an item each day to create a food hamper for Dartmouth Food Bank/Kingswear Community Pantry. Please see our advert opposite for information about our open afternoons, pre-school and Baby and Toddler groups. We would love to see you there!
