56 NEWS FROM
DARTMOUTH TOWN COUNCIL
The end of the year is a natural time to reflect on what has been achieved during the year and to start planning for the new year ahead. There is no doubt that the past 18 months has presented the Council with some challenges we could never have foreseen. An ambitious programme of renovation and upgrades of some of the council’s properties has been planned and budgeted for almost a year. Now we hope that 2022 will see those plans finally come to fruition
FACELIFT AND RENOVATION FOR SOME COUNCIL BUILDINGS
The previous administration took over the ownership of the toilets in Coronation Park, Royal Avenue Gardens and at the Castle back in 2018, and it is fair to say, all of them are now in need of urgent renovation. Work has already started on the much-needed modernisation of the Coronation Park toilet block. The existing building will be re- configured to provide one unisex, accessible toilet which will be open 24/7, along with an outside shower and retail unit, rental of which will be put out to tender. The rental revenue the council will receive from this unit will help offset the costs of cleaning and maintaining the toilets. The toilets in Royal Avenue
Gardens are also due for a major overhaul in winter 2022 (subject to planning permission). The plan is to completely refurbish all the toilets and showers. DTC also plans to reconfigure the existing building to create a new retail/ catering unit,
which would be rented out to provide some income to offset the running and cleaning costs of these toilets. It is also hoped that the long
overdue renovation of the Market Square will finally be started next summer as this work has been held up due to the pandemic. The nature of the materials needed to renovate this historic building means this work must be done during the summer months.
QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE The Council has set up a working group and allocated a grant of £5,000 to ensure that Dartmouth will celebrate the historic Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in style in 2022. The DTC working group has teamed up with representatives from Kingswear, so both communities can jointly celebrate this unique occasion. We will be a part of the national celebrations, which will include a nationwide town crier proclamation, lighting a series of beacons across the country and pipers simultaneously playing across the country. The working group is keen to make sure celebrations are as inclusive as possible so will include young and old, local organisations and businesses. Plans are still at an early stage but it is hoped celebrations will include a tea party in Royal Avenue Gardens, a BRNC Open Day and of course something to do with the river and boats!
