Christmas Magic follows launch of Museum’s Mayflower Exhibition
F
ather Christmas is portrayed magically flying over Dartmouth in a new Christmas card
produced for the Dartmouth Museum. The painting from which the image is taken contains some historical and nautical surprises! The card follows the opening of the new Mayflower Exhibition in an extension to the Museum in the Butterwalk on 23 October 2021. This high-impact exhibition marks the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers visit to Dartmouth on their way to the New World. At the centre of the exhibition is a new 12 foot replica model of the Mayflower. A new film, 10 panels and other exhibits tell the story of the Mayflower and the Pilgrims search for freedom and struggle for survival. The Christmas card was produced by artist David
Marsh, a member of the Museum, who also painted “Dartmouth in 1620” which is on display alongside the Exhibition. The Museum was interested in having a
Christmas Card and the artist volunteered to create a new picture. It is hoped the sale of the card will help raise funds towards the museum’s next project. In Santa’s sleigh, a toy model of the Mayflower is depicted, along with more recent historical items such as a Gurgle jug similar to those once made by the Dartmouth Pottery and a model of a steam train in the former Great Western Railway colours. The picture on the card also
contains magical snowflakes of crystal-like shapes reflecting children, aircraft, dolphins, fish, anchors, oars, a ships wheel and
a compass. The Christmas cards are on sale at the Museum shop in the Butterwalk, Duke Street and at the Dartmouth Community Bookshop in
Higher Street. New volunteer members are always welcome to join the Museum, a charity. If you would like to get in touch about volunteering opportunities please email
reception@dartmouthmuseum.org.
