A more rustic, traditional outdoor kitchen can suit brick or stone, whereas a modern kitchen can look great with render or porcelain tiles. “We feel every great kitchen has a gas grill, side burner, outdoor-rated fridge and pizza oven. This is our go-to template and we then expand that with warming drawers, bins, sinks, ice buckets, depending on the customer’s ideas and feedback.”
Durability is another crucial con - sideration, and you will have to ensure that any products you specify are suitable for outdoor use. Many solid surfaces on the market for regular kitchens are hard-wearing enough to be used both inside and out, and one nice idea you could consider is having an island that extends from the inside and then continues through to the garden. Doing the same with the floor tiles will help to create a cohesive and
harmonious scheme that brings the two together. The outdoor kitchen would be a continuation of the main kitchen within the home. Deseo’s Bust adds: “The key requirement from our customers is that the outdoor kitchen should be a continuation of the internal space. They don’t want a utilitarian set of boxes. Bifold doors
Another great way of creating a seamless flow from inside to out, is with bifold doors. These create that uninterrupted flow, “but also encourage the whole family to make the most of the outdoor area, creating a relaxed sociable space for morning coffees or dinners”, explains Tom Howley design

“A continuous flow between the kitchen and the garden allows for functional entertaining with friends once restrictions are lifted, enabling you to cook for, and entertain, your guests with ease.
“If you have the space, install bifold or trifold doors and open up the entire wall for a flawless flow into your garden. Bifolds or glass extensions open up your whole home and, even when tightly closed, they’ll let the light flood in all year round,” he adds. Also consider the colour scheme of the interior kitchen and try to add elements of that colour into its outdoor counterpart, which will also help to link the spaces together.
After layout, appliances are the next key thing to think about. There are many approaches you can take and which you go for will depend on the client’s budget and also on the type of cooking they most enjoy. For the pizza lover, a pizza oven or wood-fired oven, such as those from Orchard Ovens will likely be a must, while a barbecue fan will likely want a gas grill.
Our contributors agree that refrigeration is essential and for those who will be entertaining regularly, it may also be worth specifying a wine or drinks cabinet.
