So, there is much room for further growth and an opportunity for kitchen retailers to educate themselves on, and enter into, this market.
But what are the key considerations when designing an outdoor kitchen? What products are essential and what do you need to think about from a technical perspective?
Canopy Firstly, you’ll need power – gas and electricity, water and drainage – everything you’d need for a standard indoor kitchen. Next, you may want to consider housing the outdoor kitchen under a canopy. This will keep everything protected from the elements and will mean it remains functional beyond the spring and summer season.
Andrew Manciocchi, owner of Orchard Ovens, a leading importer and supplier of Valoriani ovens from Tuscany, comments: “If ingredients and utensils are not accommodated in the outdoor area, the outdoor kitchen needs to have proximity to the main kitchen. Some budgets will allow for electric shutters and screens that can convert an outdoor to an indoor kitchen and vice versa. The other key thing to remember, if specifying a
wood-fired oven, is quality. No client will thank you for an oven that disintegrates after a year, if it is the centrepiece of their outdoor kitchen.” Work flow, just like any other kitchen,
is key. Manciocchi adds: “People will congregate around food anyway, but if you have a wood-fired oven at the heart of your outdoor kitchen, they will be fascinated and it is a very interactive guest experience, with everyone wanting to have a go. “You should try to have an area for food preparation and another for food collection, plus a washing-up space away from the food. Guests will need cover, as well as space, to eat, so build that into the plans and consider where best to ‘move’ guests when it comes to drinking or dining. “Your servery and appliances need to be adequately sized and storage areas are very important too. Consider how many people your client is likely to entertain at once and make your plans suit that, building in some wiggle room.
