The market for outdoor kitchens has grown significantly over the past few years and has been boosted further still as our priorities shifted because of the Covid pandemic. Here, we ask some experts for their advice on how to create the perfect outdoor dining and entertaining space. Francesca Seden reports…

As a consequence, there has been a significant rise in homeowners looking to better equip their outdoor spaces for entertaining. The barbecue market grew year on year by £12.4 million in 2020 and saw a 391% increase in the number of barbecues Brits had during April 2020 alone. Meanwhile, our specialist contributors have noted up to a doubling of sales for outdoor kitchen set-ups. But the pandemic hasn’t been the only driver behind this increase in popularity. Homeowners, influenced by holidays to the Mediterranean, Aus - tra lia and the US, have been keen to

recreate the relaxed outdoor lifestyle they’ve experienced abroad, while in London and the South-East in particular, South African immigrants have brought with them their ‘Braai’ culture, which their neighbours are keen to copy.


One might expect this sort of kitchen to be available only at the most luxury end of the market, but in fact, a complete outdoor kitchen can be bought and installed for as little as £15,000 – certainly within reach of a significant number of UK homeowners. James Bust, director of outdoor living specialist Deseo, which exclusively imports and supplies Spanish outdoor kitchen furniture brand Novara, describes the market as in its ‘nascent stages of growth’. “It


was growing well prior to Covid, but in the past year demand has risen further as the outdoor space has become a principal factor for people moving home, particularly from urban flats to more rural houses. Developers and house builders are recognising this too and the outdoor space can be a determining factor on the attractiveness of the property to a potential buyer.” Winchester Outdoor Kitchens manager Henry Smith adds: “This calendar year could not have gone any better for Winchester Outdoor Kitchens. It has massively exceeded our expectations and we are excited to keep this going. Interest has been constant for a number of years, but we have really seen an explosion since the start of 2021 and our team have
