January 2024
The narrative of our industry post-pandemic has centred around the rapid legalisation in North America. With state after state opening up to regulated online gaming, roughly half have now legalised mobile betting in one form or another. The 'Top Five' online operators have quickly established themselves - with ESPN Bet outperforming early projections and hot on their heels. The success of these market leaders will be a benefit to everyone, particularly as their drive towards profitability becomes more acute. Further consolidation, acquisition of solution providers and regulatory rollouts await.
Piecing together the top monthly stories from Latin America a few pages overleaf, it was striking just how many markets are in the latter stages of legislating betting in one form or another - Uruguay, Peru, Chile, Sante Fe in Argentina. But Brazil will be the story of 2024. 26 states (plus one federal district), a sport-mad population of over 200 million - the potential is frightening. And there remains hope that online casinos will be reintroduced as part of the bill too. Nor is the bill centred solely on the online sector. On the casino front, the text authorises the installation of casinos in tourist centres or integrated leisure complexes under the limit of one casino in each state and the Federal District, with the exception of São Paulo, which may have up to three casinos, and Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Amazonas and Pará, in which the limit for each state is two casinos. That's a lot of casinos.
BRAZIL WILL BE THE STORY OF 2024. 26 STATES AND A SPORT-MAD POPULATION OF 200 MILLION - THE POTENTIAL IS FRIGHTENING.
Less spoken of, brimming with potential yet lingering at the edge of conversation is Africa as you can read in this issue’s feature examining the landscape. Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana boast large and growing gaming industries, setting an example for less established markets in the continent. It should be recognised how these markets are now taking action to prevent gambling related harm and putting in place stricter licensing regimes, albeit there is also an element of too little, too late. Such matters should be at the heart of any gambling regulation, which we'll hopefully see more of in 2024.
