Rock Resorts subsidiary Station Casinos for $650m in May 2021. As such it became the first Las Vegas casino resort fully owned and operated by a Native American tribe.

Te 20-year-old, 766 room property had been closed down for two years during the pandemic. It originally opened in 2001 and suffered a recession induced bankruptcy before being acquired by Station Casinos who attempted to restore the venue to its former glory.

Ten the pandemic hit and Station Casinos opted to shut down completely and sell up rather than re-open.

San Manuel opened its first bingo hall in 1986 on reservation land in California, which evolved into the Yaamava’ Resort and Casino, a luxury destination with more than 7,000 slots and a 17 storey hotel tower.

Te acquisition is part of a growing trend which is seeing more tribes entering the Southern Nevada gaming industry.

Mohegan Sun was the first entry into Vegas when it became the first Native American company to be licensed for a commercial casino operation in the state when it took over the running of the casino at Richard Branson’s Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas in March 2021.

Ten later that year, through its Hard Rock International arm, the Seminole Tribe of Florida took over the operating lease of Te Mirage from MGM Resorts for almost $1.1b.

Hard Rock, as one of the most globally recognised brands, was a noticeable absence in Las Vegas and the Seminoles now have a prime position location with a Hard Rock database of players from across the US. Tere’s a three-to- five-year redevelopment plan including the iconic new guitar shaped tower.

Meanwhile there are reports of Indian tribes buying land across the city. Earlier this year MGM sold 13 acres of a 15-acre site at the south end of Vegas, across from the Luxor, to the

Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara (MHA) nation tribes for an estimated $90m.

Tis was the site of the shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival where 60 people died when a gunman opened fire from his hotel room. Te remaining two acres of land will house a permanent memorial.

Te three affiliated tribes MHA from North Dakota already own 8.7 acres of land adjacent to their new purchase which they bought in 2020 for $12m. Te site which is zoned for gaming was part of a $100m SkyVue observation wheel and entertainment project which stalled in 2013 and then went bankrupt.

MHA Nation has been involved in gaming for the last 30 years and owns the Four Bears Casino and Lodge in North Dakota. Te tribe recently said it will add a $95m seven storey hotel tower to the site to replace the existing two storey tower in a bid to boost revenues and protect jobs threatened by the state’s legislation of ‘off reservation’ gaming.

It is likely the pandemic gave the tribes a rare opportunity to make the move into Las Vegas due to the fact that companies were re- assessing their portfolio of properties following a turbulent period for the gaming industry. And as one tribe enters the ripple effect has become apparent as the door has now firmly swung open.

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PIPELINE

Massachusetts is still pitching to open the first tribal casino in the state after a long drawn out process that is still pending.

Te licence for the state’s fourth and final casino was designated under a 2011 law (which legalised casino gaming in the state) for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe for the southeastern region of Massachusetts. But there have been continual legal challenges, which have stalled development.

Te state currently offers two commercial casinos via resorts (MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor in Everett) and also via one racino (Plainridge Park), which just operates slots.

Encore Boston Harbor opened in 2019 and has emerged as one of the most lucrative commercial casino resorts in North America with total gaming revenues of $729.6m last year making it the third highest grossing commercial casino outside of Nevada behind MGM National Harbor in Maryland and Resorts World New York in Queens. Te MGM Springfield casino saw total revenues of $259.1m whilst Plainridge reported $143.1m last year.

Tere is competition from neighbouring Connecticut and Rhode Island whilst the Mashpee tribe’s plans will be for the city of
