Manitoba is home to more than 100,000 lakes and more than two fifths of the province’s land area is forested. Te capital and largest city is Winnipeg which homes around 60 per cent of the population.
Te province is bordered between Ontario to the east and Saskatchewan to the west, the territories of Nunavut and Northwest Territories in the north, and the U.S. states of North Dakota and Minnesota in the south. Te only connection with a coastline is the Hudson Bay in northeast Manitoba.
Government sanctioned gambling began in the province in the 1970s when lottery tickets were introduced. Te sector is controlled by the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation (MBLL) which distributes and sells Western Canada Lottery Corporation products through its network of lottery retailers. It also operates VLTs, two casinos and
playnow.com.
Te Manitoba gambling sector is regulated by the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba (LGCA) and governed by the Gaming Regulation of 2014 as listed in Te Liquor, Gaming, and Cannabis Control Act.
Te MBLL saw record profits in 2022/23 of $740.9m which was given to the province to help with health care and education programmes. Total MBLL revenues reached $1.64bn (including Cannabis/Liquor sections) which was 16 per cent more than 2021/22 revenues of $1.41bn with profits of $597.8m.
CASINOS - Te MBLL operates two casinos in the city of Winnipeg - Club Regent Casino and McPhillips Station Casino. Both casinos offer around 1,200 slots and VLTs plus table games, bingo, and the ability to buy lottery tickets and take part in off-track horse racing. Plus there are restaurants and entertainment services.
Casino revenues saw $229.4m last year with a net income of $91.2m. In 2021/22 this was $118.3m revenues and $6.4m net income.
Although the revenues for last year are below pre-pandemic levels there has been a steady growth with electronic gaming revenue returning to 98 per cent of 2019 levels. Te casinos and VLT operations lost 118 and 69 operational days respectively in 2021/22 and last year was the first full year of operations.
