Comment August 2024
Once again, our August issue is a round-up of all the market reports G3 has created over the last year, as well as those created thus far by our new partners, 4H Agency. Here I'll focus on our Southeast Asia reports comprising Cambodia, the Philippines and Macau, where unsurprisingly China's growing influence is a recurrent theme. As well as featuring one of our better standfirst's about a hornet's nest, rotten branches and smoothies, our Cambodia report hones in on the explosion of Chinese backed casinos during the last decade, their disappearance during the pandemic and the subsequent series of issues that have plagued the industry, leaving the market in a state of limbo.
China has urged the Philippines to put a stop to online gambling for several years, citing its links to money laundering, extortion, and kidnapping, and it seems they are finally being listened to. President Marcos is taking a hard line on the issue, banning Philippine Offshore

Gaming Operators (POGOs) and giving the gaming regulator until end of year to shut down these businesses. It's a live issue, with the immigration chief, Norman Tansingco, saying in a statement last month that foreign workers had 59 days to leave the country or face deportation. Around 20,000 people are expected to be affected by the order, most of them Chinese citizens.
Links to China needn't be explained for our Macau report that also features an insightful article from Pedro Cortés, Managing Partner at legal firm Rato, Ling, Lei & Cortés, Lektou. Condensing rather complicated legislative matters into something readable, Pedro concludes that the government of Macau seems determined to expedite the region's return to prosperity by "skipping stages". Drawing parallels to Las Vegas in the 1980s when it underwent a shift from gaming to entertainment, gaming remains the primary driver of Macau's economy and it will take several years to transition towards a more non-gaming focused approach in an innovative manner, notwithstanding existing bureaucratic hurdles.
