There are 244 tribes operating 519 gaming


operations across 29 states (2022 data) with more than 383,000 Class III gaming machines. Revenues have grown steadily and reached $40.9bn in FY2022 – the highest in its history and almost a five per cent


increase on 2021 revenues and 18 per cent increase over pre-pandemic (2019) revenues. By comparison commercial gaming is available in 35 states with 480 casinos.


Some 55 per cent of the tribal operations reported revenues of less than US$25m, which accounted for five per cent of the total GGR in 2022.


Vice Chair of the NIGC, Jeannie Hovland said: “We have cause to celebrate the opportunity successful Indian gaming operations affords tribes to invest in the future and improve the quality of life for individual native people, their families and their communities.”


Tribal gaming has come a long way since the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was introduced 35 years ago to permit gaming on Indian lands. At this time tribal gaming saw revenues of around $121m, which increased to $5.4bn in 1995 and up to $40.9bn last year.


Growth has been dramatic with diversification and acquisitions. Many tribal casinos have flourished due to the restrictions in gaming in various states enabling them to be the only casino available both in the state and for neighbouring states.


Customer loyalty has played a big part, whilst tribes have taken the lead in terms of innovations, technology and facilities to offer some of the nation’s premier gaming resorts. Even the once impenetrable commercial market in Las Vegas now has tribal influences with developments over the last couple of years.
