Yamaha Builds Capability at EBW Electronics
surface mount technology (SMT) assembly lines. Numerous cus- tomized, robotic work cells assem- ble mechatronic products.”
Higher Capacity The need for higher capacity
is expected to continue to grow. As a result, EBWE has added new as- sembly equipment — the goal be- ing faster PCB assembly speeds and higher accuracy. Some of this speed and accuracy has been gained by investing in newer, more modern component place- ment and solder paste stencil printing equipment from Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA, includ- ing YRM20 modular component placement robotics systems.
Ross Nagelkirk, manufactur-
ing engineer for SMT at EBWE, says that “EBWE makes lighting products mostly for automotive applications, and also for some non-automotive,” but then “we had a program launch occur that stressed our SMT manufacturing capacity, so naturally we had to look at adding another line. We took that opportunity to reevalu- ate the capabilities of the ma- chines that we were using, and we evaluated Yamaha against a competitor, and as part of that process, we created a goal.” “We set a goal of 40 seconds
for an array, one side, and we could hit that with the current machines, we calculated, if we bought three of them; then we could achieve that. Actually, we were shooting for 36 seconds with
Yamaha with two machines. The alternate vendor that we were evaluating was very similar, but we looked at the overall value proposition and chose to go with Yamaha. Since we implemented Yamaha, we have surpassed that 36 seconds; in fact, we’re now un- der 30, so we’re doing better than what we expected. We realized that we only needed to upgrade a line, not buy a new one, so in the end we were able to obsolete some older technology that we were us- ing and install two Yamaha as- sembly machines, upgrading our capacity without having to invest in totally new lines.” Nagelkirk says “Doing this
enabled us to satisfy that need to manufacture our new product, an

Two Local Manufacturers to Exhibit at APEX
Continued from page 1 Techcon has launched its
new TS8200D series micro-meter mix dispensing system, a preci- sion volumetric mixing and dis- pensing system for two-compo- nent adhesives, such as epoxies, reactive acrylics, or polyure - thanes. The micro-meter mix consists
of two newly updated M-Series progressive cavity (PC) pumps in- tegrated into a fluid manifold and connected to a static mixing noz- zle. This configuration enables software-controlled mix ratio con- figurations from 1:1 to 10:1,
achieving incredibly accurate and repeatable dispensing results. An optional pressure sensor
is available to attach to each pump outlet for monitoring in- ternal pressure. If the difference in pressure between the two pumps is higher than normal, the micro-meter mix controller sends an alarm to signal the op- erator to check the pumps for clogging. This feature greatly re- duces the likelihood of cross-con- tamination and damage to the pumps, a common issue among similar two-component systems. The combination of multiple
mix ratios and the ease of main- tenance makes the micro-meter mix a cost-effective solution for the electronics, mobile device, computer, and automotive man- ufacturing industries where ac- curate dispensing of two-compo- nent materials are needed. Contact: OK International,
