AC and DC voltages, as well as prevent over- heating in enclosed fixtures. The lamp was developed and perfected by

incorporating temperature-sensing, fold-back circuit topology. It also includes a large heatsink that improves its feel during han- dling, stemming from the ruggedized form fac- tor — according to customers who held the bulb. To reduce power consumption and prevent

overloads, the foldback design limits the cur- rent, and in turn, reduces power while extend- ing the life of the LED. By allowing greater heat dissipation, the lamp can safely operate at higher temperatures than its normal operating range of –13 to +122°F (–25 to +50°C). VCC’s 9W dual AC/DC LED

bulb design was certified by a third party to UL 1993 (Self- Ballasted Lamps) for fully- enclosed fixtures. In addition to meeting all requirements for self- enclosed, true AC/DC operations, the dual emergency lamp is also designed to be a direct incandes- cent replacement with a standard A26 base and A21 shape. The lamp became available

through VCC’s distribution chan- nels, and several large-scale power facilities in North America began using them with great results. The original customer that came to VCC with the chal- lenge has replaced more than 1,200 bulbs at two facilities. “Our relationship with VCC is a true partnership,” says Brad Jolly, marketing and product manager at IRWIN. “They committed to creating the best AC/DC LED available and delivered.”

Addressing Pain Points Facility managers have plen-

ty of competing priorities, from testing emergency backup sys- tems to maintaining a safe and secure working environment. VCC’s innovative AC/DC emer- gency lamp addresses many pain points that facility managers face month in and month out. The new emergency lamp

offers: seamless AC to DC transi- tion; operating life of 50,000 hours; eliminates downtime and costs for bulb replacements; requires no tools to retrofit due to its standard base and shape; no overheating in enclosed fixtures; works well in high-voltage set- tings; uses 1/10 to 1/20th the power of previous lamps; no burn out during testing; and provides reliable emergency lighting for 8 to 10 years. By 2018, VCC’s AC/DC emer-

gency LED was in the market for a few years, and receiving great feedback.

Municipal Transit Lighting Then, Jeff Roberts of VCC

distributor Mid/West Company, received a request from a large prospective client in the munici- pal transit space who needed an IP61-rated version that would be dust-proof and water-resistant. The pain points for cus-

tomers in the transit space were like those in power generating plants Roberts took this request to VCC, who quickly modified its standard AC/DC LED and began the process for achieving IP61 status. It took about a year to get the IP61 version of the lamp approved. Now, it is available to provide safe, reli-

able and green emergency backup for transit systems, blue light towers, parking garages, tunnels, and emergency stations. “We’ve been selling the original AC/DC

lamp for over four years now, and I’ve never had a return or complaint,” says Roberts. “VCC took a great product and made it even better with the IP61 rating. Now, I sleep better

knowing the new lamp will provide reliable lighting where emergency backup is crucial.” Customers could have kept doing things

the way they always have — continuously replacing incandescent lamps and paying for through downtime and maintenance costs. However, thanks to VCC’s commitment to continuous improvement and collaboration with distributors, facilities and municipali- ties have access to a direct incandescent replacement for AC/DC applications and all the benefits and reliability it provides.
