LA UNCHING

Sustainability in numbers

resources to help members, clubs and training centres make sustainable choices. And we’ll look to other organisations, such as World Sailing and Fit For The Future, to learn from their examples. Our targets might seem challenging,

but they’re vital to ensure we make a positive impact on the environment in which we all enjoy boating. We hope to get all our staff, members and affiliates thinking about sustainability whenever they make decisions – it should be second nature.

strategy can be found at www.rya.org. uk/go/RYASustainabilityStrategy. The RYA welcomes feedback – you can send comments to environment@rya.org.uk

Boosting our green credentials with Ecotricity

T

he RYA has joined with Ecotricity, the world’s first green electricity company, to switch to eco-friendly energy. The

new agreement will see Ecotricity supply all energy to RYA House and Compass House in Hamble, and to Portland House and the RYA’s industrial units in Portland. The move builds on the objectives outlined in our new sustainability strategy, which will see the organisation working towards zero-carbon operations. Ecotricity was founded in 1996 and supplies totally green electricity and carbon-neutral gas to over 200,000 customers. It currently has 24 onshore wind-parks, providing enough green energy to power over 44,000 homes. ‘The RYA is committed to putting

into practice actions that help us to achieve our vision for a sustainable UK recreational boating sector,’ says Phil Horton, the RYA’s Environment and Sustainability Manager. ‘We’re thrilled to switch our energy supplier to Ecotricity, a company that supports this goal throughout all of its operations. ‘One hundred per cent of Ecotricity’s electricity is generated by the wind and the sun, which, alongside actions to improve energy efficiency, will dramatically reduce our buildings’ carbon footprint.’
