RYA WINTER 2020

62 Star letter Scott Free

My son Ben, who was avidly reading the latest RYA Magazine, recognised his grandfather’s Drascombe Lugger, Scott Free, in the foreground of your Where in the World photograph. It is moored in front of Newport Boat Club, The Parrog, Newport, in Wales. A week ago we were setting off to fish for mackerel and raise our lobster pots from that very spot. Sam Sarginson

Sam wins an HX210E from Standard Horizon – a great piece of kit when you’re out on the water. Not only is it a handheld VHF radio, it also includes an FM radio, which means you can listen to your favourite stations too. It’s waterproof, floats, and has a strobe light that immediately activates if dropped overboard, and provides you with the reassurance you expect from a VHF radio.www.standardhorizon.co.uk

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU

As well as your comments about RYA Magazine and the topics covered, we’d like to hear about your time on the water. If you’ve had a good, bad or funny experience, want to thank someone, or maybe have a tale of a good deed, we’d like to hear from you.

I have been a reader of your magazine for over 30 years and I find the new look a great improvement. My main interest is cruising – now I’m in my eighties, mainly dinghy cruising. But I have enjoyed reading the articles about racing, and find the foiling is unbelievable! I have always done the Yachtmaster Quiz and sometimes it has prompted me to revise my coastal skipper theory, although my theory books have probably been superseded now. We wasted a lot of time learning Morse code. Antony Sluce

Where in the World

The ‘Where In The World?’ photo in the Autumn 2020 issue was of Newport Parrog in Wales, featuring Drascombe Lugger Scott Free!

Newport Parrog, Wales As a family we first visited Parrog in 1968. We stayed in Ocean House, which is the fourth house from the left in your photo (white with dormer windows). Many people used the myriad of boats and dinghies to row, motor or sail out to sea or up the estuary to Nevern Bridge. At that time we visited to enjoy a beach holiday but realised that there was a lot of excitement that we were missing. On returning home, my wife and I signed up for an RYA course to learn to sail and bought GP14 4647. We joined South Staff Sailing Club near

Wolverhampton to improve our skills and enjoy sailing far from the sea but close to home. We then returned to Parrog for nearly 20 years and enjoyed many hours sailing in the estuary and Newport Bay as the tide allowed. When sailing in the bay, the return home over the bar had to be well timed as a swell often arose. Over 50 years later I’m enjoying my sailing at Blithfield Sailing Club now, in a Flying Fifteen. Parrog is a very special place in our

family memories. We have returned on a number of occasions to recall wonderful summer holidays. Chris Guy

Chris is the winner of our Autumn 2020 issue’s ‘Where in the World?’ competition. Your prize is on its way, Chris. Congratulations!
