TRY THIS... It’s easy to protect the environment with these simple ideas W
hen you’re making your New Year resolutions for 2021, adding a few sustainable sailing ideas to
the list can make a world of difference to marine wildlife and habitats, both offshore and inland. Environmental awareness programme The Green Blue has seven suggestions you can try…
Q Stop spills by installing an inline bilge filter on your boat to automatically remove any oil in the bilge before you pump out. Visit The Green Blue’s online business directory to discover bilge filter products.
Q Pledge to follow the ‘Check, Clean, Dry’ routine after spending time on the water. This is the best way to protect marine environments from invasive species.
Q Join a webinar hosted by The Green Blue. You can find out how to make your boating sustainable, discuss anchoring best practice and learn about underwater wildlife habitats.
Q Ask your club or training centre about its environmental policy. If it doesn’t have one
in place you can direct them to the policy guide on The Green Blue’s website.
Q Planning a trip in 2021? Use The Green Blue’s marine environmental facilities map to locate the nearest harbour/marina with environmental marine facilities, including pump-out stations, recycling and freshwater refill points.
Q Lower your energy emissions. Consider using alternative power sources such as electric and bio-diesel engines or swap to low-energy electrics, including LED lighting or solar and wind energy. Check and service your engine too – fresh oil, clean spark plugs and dust-free air filters help lower emissions.
Q Subscribe to The Green Blue’s bi-monthly e-newsletter and follow @TheGreenBlue on social media to stay up to date with all the latest environmental news and events.

above, including the Business Directory and Marine Environmental Facilities Map, can be found on The Green Blue’s website:
