Financial help on the horizon

Insurance settlements and government grants offer lifeline for clubs

property for every three weeks that they’re closed. Two levels of grant are available:

Q Larger businesses: those occupying property or part of a property with a rateable value, annual rent or mortgage of £51,000 or above, will receive £1,500 every three weeks that they are required to close.

YA-affiliated clubs and recognised training centres (RTCs) that have suffered financial losses during the pandemic may be able to claim back money from their insurers or the government. A recent court judgment means clubs and centres could get improved pay-outs under their business interference policies. Many clubs are seeing significant losses due to Covid-19 and are unhappy about how insurance companies have handled their claims. With eight insurance companies and 21 different policy wordings to be reconsidered in light of the judgement, the situation is complex. ‘On the face of it, this judgement is welcome news for many of the RYA’s affiliated clubs and RTCs,’ says Mandy Peters, RYA Legal Manager. ‘But it needs to be considered alongside the specific wording of the policies concerned. The RYA recommends that clubs and centres with business interference insurance contact their insurers to discuss the impact of the judgment on their claim.’ More information can be found on the Financial Conduct Authority’s website (www.fca.org.uk/firms/business- interruption-insurance). It’s possible that the judgment will be appealed.

Government grants

Any clubs or RTCs that are forced to temporarily close due to local lockdowns will be able to claim up to £1,500 per

Q Smaller businesses: those classified as occupying premises with a rateable value, annual rent or mortgage of less than £51,000 will receive £1,000 for every three weeks that they are closed.

As with other Covid-19 business

grants, the new local grants will be treated as taxable income. ‘The RYA welcomes this new financial support,’ says Mandy. ‘Although many clubs and centres have re-opened following the national lockdown we must not overlook those that are still experiencing local restrictions and financial hardship.’

If you have any questions about

insurance or grants, please contact the RYA Legal Team on 023 8060 4223 or legal@rya.org.uk. You can also find further guidance, including details of all the financial support available to UK businesses, on our Covid-19 hub: www.rya.org.uk/go/COVID-19hub

Safeguarding made easier

T

he RYA’s safeguarding team will be increasing its online support available to

clubs and recognised training centres, particularly for welfare officers. Online resources will include regular e-newsletters, club role descriptions, safe recruitment guidance and online training, as well as webinars and a dedicated Facebook group. The RYA’s procedure for

screening staff and volunteers with the Disclosure and Barring Service (a ‘DBS check’) is already fully online and is receiving positive feedback. This new process will make it quicker and easier for clubs and training centres to process new recruits.

Diversity focus groups begin

T

he RYA’s Safeguarding, Diversity and Equality team has been working

with industry professionals to develop our diversity strategy. Focus groups that will influence the strategy are being held this autumn. We recently welcomed a

new Safeguarding, Diversity and Equality Manager, Katie Loucaides, who took over from Jackie Reid. We wish Jackie a long and happy retirement.

safeguarding, diversity or equality policies, email katie.loucaides@rya.org.uk
