RYA WINTER 2020

regional news Updates from Britain’s coast and waterways 1 18

Creel marking The Direction on creel marking has

been passed by the Scottish parliament. It requires registered creelers to use appropriate marker buoys that display the port letter and number of the vessel laying the creels. It’s hoped this will encourage good practice and prevent problems such as trailing floating ropes. The original proposal was for these rules to apply to unregistered creelers as well, but they have not yet been included in the Direction.

Non-SOLAS nav-aids study

The Commissioners of Irish Lights (CIL) have commissioned a study of the use of non-SOLAS navigation equipment around Ireland. It will focus on five types of vessel (SOLAS-compliant ships, passenger vessels, fishing vessels, offshore leisure craft and coastal/inland waterways vessels) to learn how electronic aids to navigation are being used and how CIL can develop and possibly reduce their aids to navigation in future plans.

Marine Licence applications Delamont Country Park has been granted a

licence to build a permanent slipway. Strangford Lough Yacht Club has applied for a licence to repair and extend its slipways and jetty. And BT has applied for a licence to replace two telecommunication cables between Scotland and Northern Ireland (from Girvan to Larne and Portpatrick to Donaghadee).

Beaumaris Pier Beaumaris Pier will be

temporarily closed while it is repainted. We advise anyone considering its use on passage to check with the harbourmaster (stationed in Menai Bridge) that it’s open.

lighthouse bell The bell in the lighthouse at the entrance to the north of the Menai Strait, by Puffin Island, is to be replaced with a foghorn. There was considerable local protest at the change, but a mistake by Anglesey Council meant consent was granted for the change, rather than being put to a consultation.
