Discover greener sailing around the UK
New interactive directory lists eco-friendly facilities in marinas and harbours
P
lanning an environmentally friendly passage around the UK, or finding a marina to keep your boat where
there are green facilities, is easier than ever, thanks to a new guide launched by The Green Blue. The UK Marine Environmental Facilities Directory is an interactive map that displays the facilities at marinas, harbours and boatyards around the UK, based on information gathered during the Green Blue’s environmental marine facilities survey carried out earlier this year. Kate Fortnam, The Green Blue’s campaign manager, hopes the directory will help boaters make more informed choices about where to visit – and that
Students take part in sailing sustainability challenge
he Green Blue’s annual University Sailing Sustainability Challenge
has begun. Designed to encourage the UK’s university sailing clubs (USCs) to embrace sustainable boating, this year’s contest has attracted a record number of clubs. The competition has been supported by the British Universities Sailing Association since its launch in 2015. And with sustainability high on the public agenda it isn’t surprising that more than 30 USCs have decided to take part this year. Each year the challenge has
developed further, with more goals for clubs to achieve as they progress from Bronze to Silver and eventually to Gold. By undertaking these positive actions, USCs can demonstrate to the rest of the boating community how achievable and rewarding sustainable sailing can be. In the 2019–20 challenge,
more locations will be featured soon. ‘We’re looking forward to the directory expanding as technology develops and more organisations install environmental facilities,’ she says. ‘We’d like to thank all the organisations that participated in the survey and shared information about their environmental facilities with us.’ Facilities listed in the directory include
recycling points, hazardous waste disposal, pump-out stations, black water/ Elsan disposal and water refill points.
The directory is available for free
at
thegreenblue.org.uk. Any marine organisations that would like to register their facilities can do so for free.
12 USCs achieved the Bronze Award level and two the Silver Award. This year these clubs will be hoping to reach Gold Award level. All USCs that complete an
award level this year will be entered into a prize draw in March 2021. The higher the award, the bigger the prize!
