Welcome Welcome RYA Magazine, Winter 2020 R
unning a sailing event during a pandemic was always going to be a challenge. But with the invaluable contribution made by volunteers,
events have been held safely during the last few months. Due to restrictions, volunteer numbers were reduced at events, so those who were helping have worked doubly hard. One of our favourite events each year is the RYA
Volunteer Awards. The ceremony is usually held in London and is our chance to thank those unsung heroes, but the event became another victim of the pandemic. However, this year’s 44 individuals were still recognised by us this autumn for their exceptional dedication in boating. While the ceremony was cancelled, there were small presentations at some clubs, and we remain as thankful as ever for our volunteers’ help. We couldn’t do what we do without them. I hope you enjoy this issue. We have some great
articles, including a final look back at 50 years of RYA training and a special feature on how our OnBoard programme can improve youngsters’ lives. I wish you a safe end to 2020 and look forward to catching up with you in 2021.
