Sailing and windsurfing back on the curriculum

School’s in for watersports exams

A

lthough school life has been disrupted for pupils this year, there’s now some positive news

for young sailors and windsurfers, as examining bodies have reinstated both activities for GCSE, AS- and A-level physical education. Sailing and windsurfing can now be taught and will be assessed in 2021 for AS-level and 2022 for GCSE and A-level. Outdoor activities such as watersports are hugely beneficial for physical and mental health. They’ve also been shown to help young people develop self- confidence, independence and other positive attributes, as highlighted in our OnBoard feature on p46.

Voting open for Club of the Year

Take your pick of the 2020 finalists T

he finalists for the 2020 RYA and Yachts & Yachting Club of the Year Award, supported by

Gallagher, have been selected, and RYA members are now invited to vote to decide the winner.

The annual celebration recognises the outstanding achievements of sailing clubs across the UK, and promotes the hard work and dedication that goes into running a successful club. The RYA awards panel has selected the ten finalists for the 2020 award, and has also awarded two Certificates of Commendation.

‘We’ve been amazed at the effort clubs

have gone to in these extraordinary times,’ says RYA Programmes Manager Michelle Gent. ‘Not only have they gone to great lengths to get their members back on the water but many have helped their local community.’ The awards will be presented, and the

overall winner announced, at the virtual RYA Dinghy Show in February (see p38 for more details). Voting closes on 25 January 2021.

RYA receives UK government recognition

he Maritime and Coastguard Agency has issued a letter to prove

to foreign authorities that the RYA is recognised by the UK government and is authorised to issue various qualifications. This recognition will be essential during and after Brexit as we support our members as they’re asked to show evidence of competence while boating in Europe.
