MAKING A GREAT JOB OF FACTORY CLEANING

James Taylor, Marketing Director for EMEIA (Specialities) at Chicopee, explores the options available for both floor and surface cleaning to create a clean and hazard-free workplace.

The cleanliness of an industrial premises is vital for a number of reasons, not least to protect the health and safety of employees, productivity, customer perception and, ultimately, the quality of the finished product.

It is also central to efficiency – machines rely on a clean and hygienic working environment in order to function at their best.

Cleaning materials such as rags and cut sheets are often delivered in bulk, in large bags that are unsuitable to be used at a workstation, resulting in workers spending time fetching clean materials for each task.

In addition, low cost disposable cloth and paper wipes can generate a large amount of waste, as more are needed to complete a task, which in turn leads to excess time spent emptying bins as well as higher waste disposal costs. Linting can also be a problem, as can the fact that rags are not always of a uniform size or quality.

Traditional woven cloths can be used to remove dirt and grease; however, these require laundering regularly, which again adds unnecessary costs in terms of both time and money.

Fortunately, technological advancements have significantly improved the quality of cleaning materials available. The latest generation of disposable wipes and cloths are strong enough to tackle even the most robust tasks, offering a convenient, cost-effective solution.

TOUGH AND CONVENIENT Engineered fabric and highly absorbent fibres have improved product strength and absorbency, with leading brands becoming more abrasion resistant than ever before.

Chicopee’s recently relaunched DuraWipe range uses the company’s patented Spinlace technology, an advanced hydro-entangling process that improves strength and durability while creating highly absorbent fibres. This forms a triple-layer construction for improved performance combined with a soft cloth feel.

These attributes make the DuraWipe extremely versatile. Abrasion resistance allows it to be used for more delicate tasks such as polishing chrome grills and even drying hands while its durability means it can be used for removing grease from machinery or work surfaces. It’s also solvent resistant, and therefore can be used in combination with water or detergents without deteriorating.

This new generation of industrial wipe can be used either wet or dry: they are able to absorb fluid in the same way that paper tissues do while the greater strength and durability reduces waste. Available in pre-cut sheets with simple dispensing systems, they are simply discarded after use, removing the need for time-consuming, costly laundry.

MICROFIBRE MARVELS The use of microfibre has revolutionised the way that we clean. Ideal for removing dirt, dust and bacteria, microfibre cloths, wipes and mops are all perfect for use in the workplace.

Traditional string mops can be heavy and difficult to use when saturated, and may deliver an inconsistent clean, with more water being distributed at the beginning of the cleaning process. This method of wet-mopping also carries the risk of accidental slips and falls, along with the additional burden of the mops needing to be washed and dried after use.

Chicopee’s Microfibre Mopping System is suitable for use in all industrial settings. The mops are attached to the light and easy to use mopping tool and are discarded after use, removing the danger of dirt and germs being spread onto the next surface to be cleaned.

Designed for short-term use, dirt and bacteria are trapped within the fibres of the mop until it is discarded, which in turn removes the need for laundry.

Heavy buckets of water and detergent are no longer needed: the mopping tool incorporates a built-in reservoir that contains enough fluid to clean up to 100m2

without

being refilled. The user simply pulls a trigger on the tool to dispense fluid as and when it is needed.
