GOING FOR GOLD The 2018 Kimberly-Clark Professional Golden Service Awards shone a light on industry excellance.


Kimberly-Clark Professional believes that the most important part of any business is the people. Empowering people is one of its core values and this is demonstrated with its celebration of excellence for the cleaning industry: the biennial Kimberly-Clark Professional Golden Service Awards.


At the inaugural lunch in 1991, fewer than 40 finalists, judges, sponsors and media were present. On 8 March 2018, more than 500 leaders from the contract cleaning and facilities management industries came together to celebrate innovation, excellence and continuous improvement across these sectors.


The Kimberly-Clark Professional Golden Service Awards ceremony took place at the London Hilton on Park Lane and was hosted by British comedian Sally Phillips, following a drinks reception and three-course lunch. Scores of entries were submitted across 14 categories and, via a rigorous judging process, these entrants were whittled down to 57 finalists from 36 companies. Categories ranged from success at individual sites to recognition for training and environmental impact, through to acknowledgement of individual excellence from supervisors and cleaning operatives.


Due to the incredible standard of entries, a highly commended award was introduced for the first time in 2018 to recognise the industry’s continued success.


This first stage of judging was carried out independently by the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc), with entrants assessed across 14 categories. BICSc CEO Stan Atkins was impressed with the high standard of entries, and commented: “Whilst we congratulate our winners, all finalists must be applauded for the quality of their entries. In some categories judging was very close. What stood out

to the judges this year is that those companies who are helping to raise standards in the industry are those that are most committed to investment and training.”


The biggest winners of the day were Derrycourt Cleaning Specialists, who took home a number of awards including Best Cleaned Premises, Healthcare Establishment with fewer than 250 beds – for its efforts at Temple Street Children’s University Hospital. It claimed the Award for Industry Training for the outstanding work taking place at its Dublin training centre. As if that wasn’t enough, Derrycourt also won the Best Cleaned Premises, Hospitality Award. Finally, and perhaps most impressively, the Award for Cleaning Operative of the Year was scooped by Alberto Del Rosario, a cleaning operative for Derrycourt.


Commenting on this incredible success, Ann O’Hanlon, Managing Director of Derrycourt Cleaning Specialists, explained: “We were absolutely delighted to have received the recognition from the Golden Service Awards for these categories. To be benchmarked with peers within the industry gives Derrycourt and its clients the reassurance that we are providing a first-class service.


“The Golden Service Awards is such a prestigious event and it is always the highlight of the year for Derrycourt. The 2018 ceremony was very enjoyable with great food, enjoyable entertainment and the host added to the overall ambience and atmosphere.”


Principle Cleaning Services also received its share of praise for some outstanding work. The London-based firm claimed the award for Best Cleaned Premises, Office areas above 250,000 square feet, for its management of 30 St. Mary Axe, also known as The Gherkin. In addition,
