Current CEO, Bernard Amos, set up the company in the spring of 2009 with just five people on the payroll. Today, the company has seen huge growth and now employs over 50 people working with major customers including Marks & Spencer, Ann Summers and McArthurGlen.


In 2012, Helistrat enabled Marks & Spencer (M&S) to achieve zero waste to landfill as part of its Plan A Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) scheme, which aims to make M&S the world’s most sustainable major retailer. Helistrat also aided lingerie retailer, Ann Summers, to reach the same goal in their headquarters, with the target of doing the same for their outlets during 2013.


Key to Helistrat’s success has been their performance alongside M&S and it would be impossible not to highlight Plan A as an exceptional example of how to cultivate sustainability in waste management. Launched in 2007, Plan A has created £185million in net benefits for M&S, while achieving 38 goals more than the 100 targeted in the scheme’s five-year projections. Although it provides the benchmark for other retailers now, the forecast wasn’t always so spectacular when the scheme was launched, as Bernard points out. “Sir Stuart Rose (former CEO of M&S) was 100% behind it on a personal level but, when it was launched, there was a fear that it was going to cost money and, as such, would not be number one on most people’s agenda.”


As it turns out, waste management wasn’t even number one on Plan A’s agenda. It wasn’t until partnering with Helistrat in 2009 that M&S began to tackle the issue of waste, following a change in the delivery of soft services. Helistrat took the opportunity to show the efficiency of the current process versus new and innovative solutions which are tailored to their requirements exactly.

further, with the goal to recycle the waste sent to energy a particularly tough objective. Bernard commented: “We’re constantly evaluating those waste streams for M&S and we’re not going to assume that the solutions we put in place two years ago are still perfect today. Something that may have not been appropriate or even possible two years ago may be right today, so we’re always reviewing and changing our processes, technology and suppliers to ensure we are at the top of our game and offering our customers the most efficient solution.”


Helistrat pride themselves on offering unique and tailored solutions to their customers. There isn’t one set footprint which is stamped on every customer. Each customer is unique and, although the objectives may be of a similar nature, the solution has to be right for the customer in regards to the infrastructure and restrictions they have in place – and, of course, not everyone wants exactly the same outcomes.
