Highly Reproducible and Effi cient Phospholipid Removal Porvair Sciences has introduced a new and improved version of its Microlute®

than ever before. Krzystof Kielmann, Product Manager at Porvair Sciences commented: “Our Microlute®

PLR phospholipid removal microplate designed to enhance the fl ow of

samples through a proprietary fi lter to maximise the recovery of analytes with unmatched reproducibility. Benefi ting from the naturally hydrophobic PFTE fi lter, the new second generation Microlute®

PLR plate can be manufactured faster and more reproducibly PLR benefi cially combines our market-leading expertise of fi lter/

porous plastic manufacturing and microplate manufacturing. Unlike traditional loose-fi lled products, the solid interconnected network of evenly distributed pores in a Microlute®

PLR plate allow biological fl uids to fl ow smoothly and consistently throughout the fi lter. As a result, the Microlute® PLR is able to effi ciently remove a wide range of phospholipids from plasma and serum samples and increase the sensitivity and integrity of your UHPLC/HPLC methods.”

She added: “Our tests show that the new plate offers greater than 99% removal with high levels of recovery and reproducibility for a wide range of acidic, basic or neutral analytes. Lab scientists will benefi t from the easy-to-use Microlute®

PLR protocol, enabling them to reliably and reproducibly

remove phospholipids and recover analytes fi rst time and every time. High-throughput studies will benefi t from the reproducible, high performing sample preparation workfl ow of the Microlute® PLR.”

Smart Evaporation Technology for Increased Lab Effi ciency

Solvent evaporation specialists, BioChromato Inc has published an informative web page that describes how Vacuum Vortex Concentration (VVC) methodology enables users of its Smart Series of Evaporators remove even higher boiling solvents including water, DMSO and DMF quickly and safely.

At the heart of each BioChromato Smart Evaporator is a highly effi cient spiral airfl ow created by a special concentrator plug or ‘Spiral Plug’. This novel Spiral Plug technology generates a helical fl ow of air or inert gas agitating the surface of the solvent, increasing its surface area and thereby greatly improving the effectiveness and speed of evaporation.

Benefi cially since the evaporation vessel on a Smart Evaporator isn’t under high vacuum, there is no risk of bumping or splashing. Using VVC methodology, Smart Evaporators increase effi ciency by eliminating the time-consuming task of cleaning apparatus, potential loss of precious samples and the need to repeat the drying down process that can result from solvent bumping or splashing.

Unique C18/AR Phase for Complex Analyte Species

Horizon Chromatography has now expanded its range of column chemistries with the addition of a unique C18/AR phase; this novel chemistry is a mixture of aromatic phenolic selectivity combined with C18 ligands to offer unique selectivity options for the resolution of complex analyte species.

This new phase chemistry builds upon the company’s already impressive line-up of selectivity stationary phases, C18/PFP, AQUA C18 being just a sample of the capability to resolve and retain hydrophobic and more polar analytes together in matrix. The full Horizon®

column range is the latest in core-shell technology, a solid inner core with a porous outer ‘shell’ offers a tangible gain in effi ciency and resolution without signifi cant increases in system backpressure. This means that traditional LC systems can be used more effectively with these particles. Aurashell® peptides and protein work.

provide optimum peak shapes ensuring that sensitivity is preserved for low abundance species. The Aurashell®

columns come with the option for 14 different stationary phases, including specifi c phases for

Horizon PEP and Horizon PRO columns are designed for biomolecule analysis of higher molecular weight compounds. Having an optimised pore structure allows larger molecules to access and resolve on the stationary phase by adsorption/desorption.

The Safest Filter for HPLC and Solvent Waste SEC-MALS FOR ACCURATE SAMPLE CHARACTERIZATION

Do you collect your solvents safely, and in line with the latest safety standards? The SCAT exhaust fi lter 3.0 blocks hazardous solvent vapours, and brings state-of-the-art safety to your lab. Thanks to 3 layers of different active carbons, it protects workers and environment from evaporating solvents, acids and alkalis.

A column made for MALS and biotherapeutics The unique noise suppression of the TSKgel UP-SW3000-LS SEC column increases the sensitivity of advanced UHPLC detection.

A detector revolutionizes MALS technology The LenS3

MALS detector maximizes S/N and

provides the most sensitive and accurate MW measurement of biomolecules.

A team of experts supports your work Our team of chromatography experts enables our biopharma partners to provide safe and efficient therapies.

SCAT exhaust fi lters block off harmful vapours and ensure for safe pressure equalisation in the waste containers of HPLC systems. The company’s core active carbon has been optimised for taking up organic solvent vapours and has been tested, using offi cial ASTM/DIN/ISO test methods.

Especially in order to bind and remove alkaline and acidic gases, there are now two further layers of active carbon in the fi lters: the fi rst contains a reactive impregnation which

converts alkaline gases, by means of ‘chemisorption’, and then binds them as ‘fully reacted’ components. The second layer also consists of a highly active carbon, this one having been optimised for binding acidic gaseous components.

The active surface area has been increased by no less than 25%, i.e. from 1,200 m²/g to 1,500 m²/g. As per the ASTM D3467 Norm, the CTC adsorption value achieved by the new active carbon, Generation 3.0, is now 90% (hitherto 70%).

Traditionally-used active carbon (used for many years now), which however is not ideal for fi ltering out acids and alkalis, as it often only does so insuffi ciently. Its adsorption effi ciency (‘CTC value’) is comparatively low, as is its active surface area (600 - 1,200 m²/g).

With their 3 layers, the Generation 3.0 exhaust fi lters are able to remove more gaseous components produced during HPLC work than any others available on the market. The main advantage for the user is that only a single fi lter type need be employed, for all applications - even when methods or solvent compositions used are altered.

The laboratory operator thereby achieves not only the highest possible standard of working safety and environmental protection, but also benefi ts from predictably high levels of effi ciency, and by enjoying the associated cost savings involved - work in the laboratory is thus made ‘doubly’ safe.
