Precise and dependable sampling for lower emissions of alternative fuels

and raw materials (AFR) at cement kilns According to the European Cement Association, up to 95 percent of traditional fuels used in cement production can be replaced with alternative fuels and raw materials (AFR) to help reduce emissions. However, the potential volatility of AFR brings with it an increased risk of explosions, which in turn cause expensive kiln stops.

To overcome this obstacle to AFR usage, ABB has launched ProKiln, an inlet gas sampling system that reduces harmful emissions by enabling accurate measurement of alternative fuels, which decreases infrastructure maintenance costs and plant downtime.

Cement production requires a lot of energy. And as demand for cement rises, so do the energy requirements to produce it. This is a challenge as governments worldwide are highly focused on reducing the environmental impact of the very AFR fuels that cement producers need. Moreover, AFR can create dangerous pockets of incomplete combustion within a kiln, leading to increased risks of explosion and costly kiln stoppage.

That’s why ABB developed ProKiln, which provides permanent and uninterrupted process control in cement rotary kilns. The new kiln inlet gas system features powerful probe cleaning with increased mechanical strength, which includes a dual probe retraction system unique to the market to ensure no sampling interruption.

30 years of industrial combustion monitoring excellence 2024 marks the

30th anniversary ABB’s ACF5000 gas analyzer, the first multi- component

turnkey emission monitoring system using fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. With integral FTIR technology – a technique used to obtain an infrared

spectrum of gas emissions – the gas analyzer simultaneously measures up to 15 components with the highest levels of accuracy and reliability.

The ACF5000 system, still manufactured in its city of origin, Frankfurt, is now in its fourth generation. It supports industrial companies by measuring the industry’s lowest concentrations of gases from combustion processes. The drift-free gas analyzer measures exhaust gases from industrial chimneys in chemical plants, waste incinerators, cement kilns and more.

Over 30 years, the system has seen constant performance improvements. The current generation ACF5000 is designed for expandability, enabling it to adjust to customers’ evolving needs. New, mandatory components or changed emission limits can be added by a mere software upgrade. Thesre are often driven by new requirements in environmental monitoring, so lower concentrations of an increasing number of pollutants must be measured from combustion processes. As industrial plants are heavily monitored and have to comply with the most stringent requirements, which makes the ACF5000 the perfect, market-leading fit to ensure compliance with those changing requirements.
