Biogas Spotlight 59 Crop Digestion Plant Chooses Portable Biogas Analysers


Future Biogas creates opportunities for its farming customers to generate income streams by delivering reliable renewable energy. For success, it is vital for customers to know and monitor methane (CH4), oxygen (O2) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) levels. Accuracy with those readings is incredibly important.


David Allan of Future Biogas said, "We bought the Geotech (UK) BIOGAS 5000 portable biogas analyser after seeing it at a trade show. We had tried a similar unit from Germany, but we preferred the Geotech. I find the unit to be robust, accurate and easy to operate. It is a great improvement to its predecessor, one of which we also own. The increased portability is its best feature for me. The Geotech GA3000 fixed position biogas analyser came as part of an engine contract, and seems to work really well."


The customer’s farm generates CH4 by anaerobic digestion of crops, then stores and uses the biogas in an engine to generate electricity. A minimum level of CH4 is required which the analyser measures and Future Biogas sets up the engine based on the CH4 level. A maximum level of O2 and H2S is controlled on the system based on the readout from the analyser.


Future Biogas specialises in the construction and operation of biogas plants. These plants operate on a range of locally sourced biomass feedstocks, generating clean, renewable and reliable energy mainly through anaerobic digestion of crop biomass.

FLIR Systems (France) have announced that their FLIR GF320 Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) camera offers unmatched advantages for non-invasive monitoring of leaks from biogas storage tanks.


Optical gas imaging using the FLIR GF320 offers tangible benefits compared to traditional biogas leak "sniffers" because it can scan a broader area much more rapidly and monitor areas that are difficult to reach with contact measurement tools. The portable camera also greatly improves operator safety, by detecting emissions at a safe distance.


The FLIR GF320 contains a cooled Indium Antimonide (InSb) detector. This highly sensitive detector, that operates in the 3.2 - 3.4 micrometer waveband, not only visualises biogas leaks, but also makes the smallest of temperature differences on the storage tank clearly visible.


The FLIR GF320 will be on display in Stand A328, Halle 20 at BioGasWorld - an international trade exhibition for biogas technology and decentralised energy supplies due to take place in Berlin, Germany (23-25th April 2013).

Bio Gas Monitor Adds to Range of Flow Sample Systems


Amongst GDS Technologies (UK) newest innovations, the GDS308 is the latest addition to its range of flow sample systems, specifically designed for the bio gas market.


Designed for the monitoring of CH4, H2S, CO2 and O2, the GDS308 can be operated in such applications as Biogas Plants, Landfill Sites, Anaerobic Digestion and Waste Water Plants offering Fuel Gas Monitoring.


The cutting edge technology of the GDS308 allows the monitoring of up to four gas types by sample extraction along a 250m maximum common sample line. The control unit provides gas level readouts with two alarm stages and a range of signal and data outputs for logging, annunciator and control functions. Operator interface and calibration are intuitive providing simple installation and maintenance requirements for the monitor. The GDS308 can also offer its user comprehensive self-check fault monitoring along with event logging RS232 output and Modbus RTU RS485 data. has an internal cab gas sensor that will cut power to the system in case of an explosive leak being detected within the cabinet. Other optional features include: repeater panel with button control, giving an option to view the display information within 1km. An over housing can be provided, giving an option of IP66 rating (an increase on the standard IP63). Sample line maintenance is achieved by automatic line blow back, utilising instrument air with line blockage and pump failure monitoring. The flexible design of the GDS308 can also include the ability to add external relays for local control, up to 1km from the main control panel.
