Ionicon Celebrates their 15th Anniversary
Ionicon (Austria), specialist manufacturers of PTR-MS real-time trace gas analysers, was founded in July 1998 with the intention to commercialise a technology developed by scientists at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. The company now offers solutions for a broad range of markets covering environmental research, food & flavour science but also medical and biotechnological process monitoring.
Ionicon develops and manufactures ultra-sensitive real-time trace gas analysers using the unique Proton Transfer Reaction – Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) and proprietary Selective Reagent Ionisation – Mass Spectrometry (SRI-MS) technology. Besides this a portfolio of calibration devices for analytical trace gas analysers has been successfully introduced.
When Ionicon launched the first PTR-MS in 1998, it revolutionised the direct and online analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Before, scientists had to rely on cost and time consuming chemical methods that wouldn't provide such a high time-resolution nor sensitivity.
Founded on 14 July 1998, as a one-man operation, Ionicon soon was to become an international success story with an approximate 90% export share of its steadily increasing turnover. Currently the company has a staff of close to 30 experts.
Over 250 leading scientists, institutions and multinational corporations are among Ionicon’s customers. They rely on PTR-MS instruments for results in real-time, capable of detecting one out of a trillion parts (LoD < 1 pptv) without time consuming sample preparation procedures. Applications of Ionicon instruments are ranging from atmospheric chemistry and environmental research to food and flavour science, real-time monitoring of industrial fermentation processes and of synthetic gas production processes in the petrochemical industry but also in toxic or illicit substances detection.
Scientists at the University of Innsbruck’s Institute for Ion and Applied Physics deploy innovative Ionicon PTR-TOFMS technology regularly on NASA atmospheric research aircrafts for measuring air pollution in the atmosphere. Their colleagues from the same institute use PTR-MS in experiments at CERN that recently resulted in a NATURE journal article. Ionicon CEO Lukas MÄRK adds: “Aircraft companies but also car manufacturers monitor the quality of cabin air with our instruments. Large food companies such as espresso-capsules manufacturers or flavour & fragrance producers rely on PTR-MS for sensory analytics. Scientists aboard icebreakers, atmospheric chemists screening the air in Antarctica or in rainforests, biologists trying to understand relationships between insects and plants, there are countless applications for our instruments.”

Trajan Completes Acquisition of SGE Business
Trajan Scientific and Medical (Australia), “Trajan” has completed its acquisition of the Chromatography and Liquid Handling businesses of SGE Analytical Science, “SGE”. SGE was founded by Ern Dawes in Melbourne Australia in 1961 and has remained in the Dawes family for over 50 years. Its business, focussed on components and consumables used in scientific analysis has grown to around 300 staff worldwide with manufacturing operations in Ringwood Australia and subsidiary offices in the USA, Europe and Japan.
Dawes Holdings, the parent company of SGE, owned by Peter Dawes, will retain a range of assets, including the ETP Electron Multiplier business. Under the new ownership SGE will continue to work closely with ETP and provide global support and distribution services as is the case today.
Trajan, formed in 2011, acquired the pathology consumables business of Grale Scientific, (Victoria Australia) in October 2011.

Driven by innovations like the industry itself, analytica (Germany) will feature a new attraction when it opens in April 2014: For the first time ever, there will be a special show on occupational health and safety in the laboratory. Successful concepts such as the Live Labs and the renowned analytica Conference will also be continued.
While everyone waited with great anticipation for the innovative addition to last year’s trade fair, i.e. the Live Labs, the new topic on the 2014 program of events is occupational health and safety. Susanne Grödl, Exhibition Director for analytica, explains: “Whether in research or industry, the safety of laboratory employees is extremely important. Until now, none of the world’s trade fairs for analysis and laboratory technology featured a special show on the topic.” But the 2014 fair will cover it in live demonstrations that are part of the Live Labs. With some 3,000 visitors, they were the highlight of last year’s fair. In 2014, the Live Labs will be located in Halls B1, B2 and A3 again and will focus on topics such as food and water analysis, plastics analysis and the life sciences.
At this point, 580 companies have registered for the fair (compared to 553 exhibitors in 2011), and nearly two-thirds of the space in the five halls is occupied. Those companies include industry leaders such as Agilent, Analytik Jena, Beckman Coulter, Becton Dickinson, Bruker, Büchi, Carl Zeiss, Eppendorf, GE Healthcare, Horiba, Julabo, Metrohm, Perkin Elmer, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Shimadzu and VWR International. As in the past, the share of international companies has also seen another increase – this time by 22 percent.

New Product Development Contract Signed
Modern Water plc (UK), the owner of specialist water technologies for the production of fresh water and monitoring of water quality, has entered into a new substantial product development contract with global agrochemical company United Phosphorous Inc. (UPI). Under the contract Modern Water will develop and supply a new herbicide testing system.
The new test system will detect Endothall, an aquatic herbicide used in rivers, streams, irrigation canals, lakes and other waterways to control Hydrilla and other vegetation. Endothall was first synthesised in 1928 and has since been used extensively for aquatic weed control. Development of the test system will focus on increased portability and obtaining near instant results when in the field.
This contract is part of a 13 year collaboration between UPI and Modern Water’s monitoring division involving the development and production of testing products and will provide UPI with an exclusive license to use and distribute the new test kits.
Modern Water’s CEO, Simon Humphrey, commented: “We are very pleased to continue working with UPI, one of the world’s fastest growing agrochemical companies, and look forward to providing UPI with a new high quality, rapid test kit.”
Gerald Adrian, Business Manager for UPI’s Aquatics Division, commented: “We are excited about having a field test that will provide us with practically instant results with very good accuracy. This has been needed for some time, and Modern Water has developed the technology we need.”
