Classical Publishing dead! ?? Not by a long way!

2014 has seen a remarkable swing from online back to traditional promotion. This year, following on from an upsurge in marketing in classical publications such as this, and specific exhibitions in niche markets in 2013, 2014 looks that it will be a bumper year.

Our 40th Anniversary edition of International Labmate has been a witness to this. I thank all those advertisers and readers who sent in kind and supportive comments on the editorial in the ‘40 Years of Publishing’ issue and yes, we were happy to publish stories on the foundation of thriving companies founded over 30 years ago. Non thriving ones and others may also send in editorial on their latest products and if suitable we will publish. It is in our interest to see our advertisers succeed!

I can recall, over 30 years ago, a company from a UK University wanting to advertise a new chromatography product in Labmate. To his surprise I suggested they didn’t and recommended they send in a news release to see what was the market potential. The news release was run with excellent response. However, one of my competitors persuaded the potential client to advertise in his publication at considerable expense with less satisfactory results. The outcome is that we are still friends with that company and the rival publishing house does not exist.

The Guide was originally published in 1976 with the assistance of my friend Guy Warwick. Guy compiled the company listings and he suggested we called the publication ‘A Compendium’. A reasonable suggestion except I believed that half of our UK readers and 90% of our International subscribers would have no idea as to what we were doing. Hence, ‘The International Guide to Scientific Instruments and Chemicals’, and this our Lab Asia Guide, which I hope you enjoy and find useful.

Shows – Our exhibitions have been widely praised, not just because they attract visitors of the highest quality and quantity, but they are also extremely entertaining and fun. Our company’s ethos has always been ‘work hard and play hard’. This year we ran CEM 2014 in Istanbul ‘Continuous Emission Monitoring’ with delegates from over 50 countries, 25% up on the previous show. Shortly we have WWEM ‘Water, Wastewater, Environmental Monitoring and Analysis’ coming up in Telford, England, for the sixth time on 5/6th November 2014 – Over 160 exhibitors, major conferences, free parking, free lunches, tea, coffee and a gala dinner, well worth visiting! – www. wwem.uk.com.
