First in Vitro Diagnostic Kit for Joint Replacement Infections
Ingen Biosciences announced that the company will market in Europe the first in vitro diagnostic kit to detect infections in prosthetic replacements. The diagnostic kit, BJI InoPlex(TM), is built around Ingen Biosciences’ proprietary technology. The kit consists of a panel of new high-standard antigens developed by the company. The first generation kit detects in the range of 75% of infections found in joint replacements, such as Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis.
BJI InoPlex is the first of its kind on the market. The alternative to Ingen Biosciences’ non-invasive serological test is to put patients through a lengthy and costly surgical procedure to open up the knee joint, for example, and search for the infection. BJI InoPlex, therefore, can offer major economic benefit in detecting, treating and monitoring infection in the joint replacement process.
BJI InoPlex is the first-generation of in vitro diagnostic kit that Ingen Biosciences will make available before end of the year. Through a standard industry technology license, Ingen Biosciences has the rights to sell the kit in Europe, at first. The company plans to sell to other geographic markets in the future. The company also plans to launch a second-generation diagnostics kit in 2011 that will include new antigens to detect other infections in joint replacements. “None of the antigens for the test kit existed until we developed them,” said Jean-Pierre Hermet, chairman and CEO of Ingen Biosciences. “Since infections in joint replacements is a niche market, it has tended been overlooked by incumbents making in vitro diagnostic kits. At present, we have the market to ourselves.”

Made-to-Measure Micropumps for OEM Applications
Choosing a pump which is ideally suited to an endless variety of OEM and industrial high- precision liquids transfer applications is possible thanks to the extensive range of external gear pumps developed by MICROPUMP. Available from Michael Smith Engineers the range comprises 9 series of pumps covering flow rates from as low as ml/hr and up to 40 lit/min at maximum discharge pressures between 5.2 and 8.5 bar, depending on the model and the fluid.
This unrivalled range of pumps, combined with the variety of available options, allows users to specify a pump that is tailored specifically to their application. For example, high system pressure versions are available for pumping liquids in high pressure applications, also the pumps are available in a choice of metallurgies including stainless steel and Hastelloy-c, while a range of different gear materials can be specified to best suit the liquid being pumped and the duty parameters. Pumps can also be supplied with different porting arrangements.
All models have magnet drives, so there is no leakage of the process fluid giving users the benefit of reduced environmental, health and safety and chemical handling issues. The external gear design provides the benefit of a smooth, pulse-free and highly accurate output, so the distribution of the process liquid is even and constant, as opposed to more unpredictable pulsed flows from other types of pump. The output of the pumps can be adjusted by altering motor speed while control options depend on the motor/drive specified. These include 0-5 VDC or 4-20 mA or RS232 automatic control, in addition to manual control via a potentiometer.
