The Jenway 62 Series fluorimeters are designed to suit a wide range of budgets and applications. All three models in the range offer intuitive operation, press-to-read operation and Intelligent Filter Modules (IFM). Using the optimal filter combination of excitation and emission ensures that selectivity is also enhanced, enabling interference free analysis.
All models in the 62 series enable simple raw fluorescence measurements to be made without the need to calibrate. If precise concentration measurements are required, these can be made by calibration with a blank and standard solution. Where expected sample concentrations may cover a wide range, a calibration curve can be created with up to six standards. Each model can store twenty methods, which are PIN protected and 100 results can be stored in each method. There is also optional PC software available to aid kinetics assays or time course experiments.
There are three models in the range, models 6270, 6280 and 6285. Model 6280 uses a sensitive photomultiplier detector enabling it to be used for very sensitive determinations with emission wavelengths up to 650nm. Model 6285 has a red-enhanced PMT detector making it ideal for sensitive applications which require detection at higher emission wavelengths up to 850nm, such as the measurement of chlorophyll a. Model 6270 can be used for less sensitive applications with a broader wavelength range, which makes it ideal for use in education.
Night Blindness
Xerophtalmia (dry eyes) and nyctalopia (night blindness) are symptoms of Vitamin A deficiency, in more serious cases eye lesions and an increased susceptibility to infections are common. While poor reproductive ability, loss of teeth enamel and misshaped bone formation may occur without correction.
The improvement of diet and introduction of vitamin supplements have reduced such problems in the industrialised world but they are still prevalent in most third-world countries.
The analysis of Vitamin A in foodstuffs, blood or serum samples can be carried out on a simple filter fluorimeter available from Jenway. This rugged, low cost instrument is suitable for laboratory or field use, requires little maintenance and is very easy to use.

Histamine in Fish Products
Intelligent
Fluorimetry Introducing the Jenway 62 series
Histamine is routinely used as an indicator of the presence of scombrotoxicosis in raw fish and fish products. Jenway have a range of simple fluorimeters suitable for histamine analysis that can be programmed with the settings for this and other similar tests. The use of Intelligent Filter Modules ensures that the correct excitation and emission filters for the selected test have been fitted; while for more complex tests up to six standards may be used to create an accurate calibration curve. This range is compatible with Jenway’s DataWay software package which enables results to be downloaded to a PC and easily exported to Excel.
Circle no. 46 Toxic Algae
The levels of phytoplankton or algae, the microscopic plant matter living in natural water sources, have risen considerably in recent years. This is often considered the result of the eutrophication of these waters caused by the excess use of fertilisers and domestic or industrial wastes.
The toxic products of blue-green algae are widely published in the news but with any phytoplankton the period after an algal bloom can lead to the mortality of fish and other aquatic life as the decaying material consumes vital dissolved oxygen.
All algae contain chlorophyll a and measuring this photosynthetic pigment with a simple fluorimeter will give a quick indication of the total algal population. The Jenway range of filter fluorimeters has a model with an enhanced red-sensitive photomultiplier to ensure optimum sensitivity at the emission wavelength for this application. Method storage further enables the settings to be saved and re-called for future analysis while both laboratory and field analysis are possible.
