Live Cell Printing for High Content Analysis


Digilab, Inc announced the introduction of the CellJet Cell Printer for live cell printing for high content analysis and cell assays. The CellJet utilises Digilab’s proprietary contamination-free, non-contact synQUAD dispensing technology offering both on-the-fly and drop-by-drop non-contact cell printing while maintaining the viability of even the most delicate cells. This CellJet offers users full control over critical dispense parameters such as height of dispense and dispensing speed, which allows printing of both viscous solutions and fragile cells.


The Digilab CellJet prints into plates or onto slides using a valve-free fluid path, which greatly reduces cell damage. The CellJet Cell Printer also includes full wash capability, an easy-to-clean and sterilise evaporation cover, and an effective instrument design for hassle-free maintenance. Cells are aspirated from their source through ceramic tips into coiled tubing and dispensed into microtiter plates or slides without making contact with any valve. The CellJet offers the ability to dispense a droplet anywhere within a microtiter plate or to multiplate droplets spatially within a single cell.

On Demand Protein Expression


The High Throughput Expression (HiTEL) Laboratory at the University of York is a service facility offering bespoke protein expression, using a Freedom EVO 200 workstation to meet its heavy demand for complete automation of high throughput cloning, expression and screening. “As a busy service laboratory, we rely on our automated systems to ensure reproducible cloning and protein expression for our clients,” explained Experimental Officer Dr Rachel Adamson. “When the HiTEL facility was first established in early 2006, Tecan’s support allowed us to get our system set up and running very quickly, and we have been able to integrate a lot of different equipment into our workstation with the Company’s help.”


“Automation of the cloning process minimises variation between samples and eliminates operator errors,” Rachel added. “This gives us a high level of confidence in the quality and quantity of protein we can produce for our customers. Equally importantly, it offers walkaway automation of time-consuming laboratory processes, allowing staff to perform other tasks and helping to accelerate our production.”

Voltammetric Analysis Methods in Electroplating


Due to their high selectivity and low detection limits, voltammetric analysis methods are indispensable in surface finishing and PCB production. The application spectrum ranges from bath control to wastewater analysis. The present monograph is free of charge and provides a comprehensive overview of specific methods and also covers the determination of organic additives. The first part of the monograph is dedicated to wastewater analysis in the galvanic industry using stripping voltammetric methods. Since wastewater almost always contains organic compounds, samples must be pre-processed prior to analysis. For this purpose, the authors recommend UV treatment using Metrohm’s 705 UV Digester.

The authors provide a systematic overview of the different bath types for each element as well as their primary and secondary components. Back to School to Discuss the World Cup


Fresh from the success of the Whitehouse Scientific co-sponsored Philippines national team in the Deloitte Street Child World Cup, Managing Director, Dr Graham Rideal, has been sharing his experiences with schoolchildren near the company’s base in Chester.


“With the World Cup being the hot topic in the playground this has been an ideal time to talk to local schools about my time in Durban where the games were played,” said Dr Rideal. “I’ve been able to make it fun while at the same time telling students about the millions of vulnerable and marginalised children throughout the world who currently live on the streets.”


The Deloitte Street Child World Cup was designed to give forgotten children a voice and to campaign for their rights.


The tournament marked the launch of a new initiative from the Amos Trust, an organisation that works with a network of community projects from around the world to raise awareness of, and provide support to address, injustice and poverty. Organisers believe that no child should be forced to live on the streets. Together, they call for street children’s rights to a full, healthy, dignified life, as set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).


As a result of its overwhelming success, similar tournaments are being lined up in the Ukraine (2012 European Cup finals), Brazil (2014 FIFA World Cup finals), France (2016 European Cup finals) and, if their bid is successful, the United Kingdom (2018 FIFA World Cup finals).


“Although the tournament is over for this year, the work of the new Amos Trust initiative continues,” said Graham Rideal. “They help give support to the street children and try to give them a small part of the lifestyle that others take for granted.”
