Breakthrough User Interface Heralds New Generation of Low Cost LIMS
A new breed of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), which features a breakthrough user interface, is being launched by London-based start-up company, Two Fold Software Ltd. The easy-to-use Qualoupe LIMS solution greatly simplifies LIMS use while very significantly lowering running costs.
Offering major productivity gains, improved quality management and reporting flexibility, Qualoupe features an intuitive, configurable user interface designed to enhance the user experience and revolutionise work flow.
A powerful, versatile laboratory tool, Qualoupe delivers the information the user really needs while distancing them from having to understand or see the underlying LIMS data structures. The easy to install LIMS is ‘Quick to Go Live’ which saves both time and money and minimises installation disruption.
The Web-based Qualoupe user customisable interface is principally icon-driven and features uncluttered screens using a Just Enough Information Model (JEIM) that requires minimal mouse clicks to operate. For most applications there are a maximum of four action buttons located in the same area of each screen to simplify user operation.
Qualoupe’s Self Learning Interface (SLI) monitors data that is commonly used by each user, facilitating faster selection of records, which coupled with native data queries, offers very powerful ad hoc real time information access in support of decision making.
The interface features microformats associated with fields that are capable of linking to other systems or services. Third party application access via the user interface can be readily implemented. Qualoupe can also be easily configured to be multilingual throughout.
Qualoupe offers full audit trails and helps to simplify compliance with UKAS, FDA, ISO 17025, MRC, GLP and GMP. The system’s software is optimised to share data across and between an organisation’s sites and supports both manual and automated data capture.

New Real Time White PCR Consumables
The new BrandTech Scientific white PCR consumables are designed to optimise results for Real Time PCR (qPCR). Uniformly coloured with Titanium dioxide, Brand white PCR products offer significantly better results in the analysis of fluorescence signals and consequently with the quantification of the replicated DNA. Extra-thin wall dimensions provide optimal thermal transfer and short cycle times. Reflection of the fluorescence signal is optimised by smooth surfaces. Available in strips of 8, as well as 24-, 48-, 96- and 384-well plates suitable for use in most thermal cyclers. Manufactured in clean room conditions Brand PCR products are DNase, DNA- and RNAse-free.

Still Spraying After all These Years It is now 30 years since the launch of the
2600, Malvern Instruments’ first laser diffraction particle size analyser capable of routine, rapid spray droplet size measurements. To celebrate, Malvern wants to contact anyone still successfully using the 2600 for spray analysis and is inviting visitors to ILASS Europe to bring a photo of their 2600 in action to the Malvern booth. Anyone who does so will be entered into a prize draw to win an iPod Nano.
Bringing spray measurement right up to date, Dr Anne Virden from Malvern Instruments will present a paper at the conference focusing on ‘The effect of viscosity, pump mechanism and orifice diameter on the droplet size of a nasal spray’. Dr Virden’s paper describes work undertaken using Malvern’s latest Spraytec system, and exemplifies just one of its many current applications in the pharmaceutical sector.
In the course of more than a quarter of a century in spray research, Malvern has pioneered developments in both the technology of spray measurement using laser diffraction and its applications. Today this expertise is embodied in the Spraytec, delivering a data acquisition rate of up to 10kHz, a very broad dynamic range (0.1 to 2000 microns) and a patented multiple scattering algorithm for measurement at high concentrations. With easy instrument configuration and a wide optical working range making the spray system characterisation straightforward, integral software provides effective data analysis, making it easier to detect and understand the source of any variability in atomisation performance. Fuel injectors, agrochemical nozzles, inhaled pharmaceuticals and coating systems are just a few of the many applications for which Spraytec offers a unique solution.
