38 Extended Range of CRMs to Cover Far UV to NIR Spectral Region
Starna Scientific’s Calibration and Reference Material manufacturing laboratory has extended the Starna range of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs), providing the most comprehensive range of UV/Visible/NIR materials currently available under the scope of ISO Guide 34 + ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for Reference Material producers.
The CRMs are essential for ISO/IEC accredited laboratories, pharmaceutical QA/QC or metrology departments enabling the provision of Operational Qualification (OQ) and Performance Qualification (PQ) of UV/Visible/NIR instrumentation using ‘Industry Standard’ protocols.
Starna is the only Reference Material producer accredited to both ISO Guide 34 and ISO/IEC 17025 in the UV/Visible/NIR spectral range. The CRMs the company now provide extend the
scope of available materials for spectral range, band width and photometric linearity.
“We now produce CRMs for wavelength and Transmittance scales, certified in accordance with ISO Guide 34 and ISO/IEC 17025, for the complete Far UV to NIR spectral region (190 – 2850 nm),” explained Keith Hulme, Starna’s Managing Director. The Starna®
Lifetime Guarantee is offered on all Starna® manufactured Certified Reference Materials (CRMs). The guarantee provides for a free of
charge replacement should the assigned values move outside the expanded uncertainty budget within the recertification period of two years, subject to conditions of use/care and recertification by Starna at least every two years.
Circle no. 141 ADVERTORIAL New Closed-loop Containment Isolator
The new closed-loop containment isolator is the most recent HEPA filtered glove box offered by Plas-Labs. The 830-ABB/CLC contains two (2) 20.32 cm round HEPA filters, magnehelic gauges, blower, and pre-filters.
The glove box operates under a slight negative pressure. The optically clear glove box construction provides optimum light and visibility inside the glove box.
All glove boxes include bright white ambidextrous Hypalon gloves, electrical outlet strip, four (4) valves for purging, and an optically clear cylindrical transfer chamber. Clearly your best choice!

Telstar has developed the first biosafety cabinets for the handling and processing of NaCl nanoparticles. The 100% effectiveness of the cabinets has been verified through experiments performed as part of the NanoSost project.
Telstar’s research and innovation department for life sciences, specialised in the development of biological systems protection and air flow control technologies, has demonstrated that its containment technology applied to biosafety cabinets gives total protection to the operator when handling NaCl (sodium chloride) nanoparticles for biomedical and technological applications.
The experiments with nanoparticles under the NanoSost project took place in May 2010 and were performed in a clean room with CytoUltra equipment (Cytostatic type biosafety cabinet) at facilities equipped for experimentation for research centres and laboratories. The first published results of the NanoSost project show that the equipment developed by Telstar enables these types of nanomaterials to be worked with in total safety. Telstar’s innovation team continues its research into the development of new technologies to protect against other types of nanoparticles.
Telstar took part in subproject 5 of the NanoSost project for nanotechnology research, the aim of which is to establish scientific bases in risk control and create knowledge to improve protection to and control of risks derived from exposure to nanoparticles. NanoSost is a singular, strategic project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and headed by IQS. Businesses, universities and research centres have collaborated for a year-and-a-half on this project to establish the bases for sustainable, responsible and safe nanotechnology. This project relies on the active involvement of Spain’s main technology and research centres.
