55 New Compact Vacuum Pumps for Filtration and SPE

At Analytica 2010 Vacuubrand launched the new diaphragm pumps ME 1 and ME 1C. They complete the range of compact vacuum pumps for applications like filtration and sample preparation in chemistry, microbiology, wastewater control and other analytical processes. The ultimate vacuum of 100 mbar obtains 90% of atmospheric pressure that is doing the work of forcing the media through the filter. For aqueous filtration, the ME 1 is the optimal choice; however, for more aggressive solvents, the ME 1C with its superior chemical resistance properties is the right solution. The new top mounted power switch and the space saving design
offers an easy-to-use functionality even with gloves and requires minimal bench top space. An optional manual control valve with dial gauge enables variable fine adjustment of the pumping speed (max. 0.7m³/h).
The ME 1 and ME 1C allow an almost maintenance-free use. New designed from the established technology of the three-stage model line MD 1 and MD 1C they stand out due to a proven long diaphragm life.

Greek Researchers Prefer Microbalance Kits
Based in Athens, NCSR (National Centre for Scientific Research) Demokritos is one of Europe's leading research establishments, undertaking work in a variety of fields. It comprises eight institutes, several of which have designed and built specialist apparatus incorporating microbalances from CI Electronics in the UK.
Unlike other suppliers of microbalances, CI Electronics offers the devices in kit form, which is especially useful in research applications where the microbalance needs to be built into bespoke apparatus. Most of the kits supplied to NCSR Demokritos contain, in addition to the microbalance head, components such as the DISBAL control unit, temperature control option, LabWeigh software package, cables and accessories. A popular option is PTFE coating for the microbalance head.
Typical of the microbalance applications is that of George Pilatos, a chemical engineer working in the MESL (Materials and Membranes for Environmental Separations Laboratory) within the Physical Chemistry Institute. The microbalance head is being used for carbon nanotube formation studies and has been adapted within the lab (following the detailed instructions supplied by CI Electronics) to enable it to be used at pressures of up to 10 bar.
The chemical vapour deposition (CVD) apparatus in which the microbalance is used includes a flow system - with three mass flow controllers and a digital back-pressure controller - and a high-temperature stainless steel tube inside a vertical tubular oven. Readings from the microbalance indicate the exact time at which the carbon depositions begin to form and the rate of weight gain.
George Pilatos stated: "We have bought several microbalance kits from CI Electronics since 1997 because the purchase price is good, the heads are reliable and they are simple to integrate with other equipment such as flow systems, valves and ovens.”

Concentrating Environmental Samples Prior to Analysis
For environmental laboratories it is of great benefit to concentrate samples prior to analysis to help accurately determine levels of analyte in a given sample.

The addition of Bile Aesculin Agar to Lab M’s range of media for the isolation and culture of Enterococci has ensured the portfolio covers a wide variety of applications for these organisms. The range now includes media specifically designed for use with water, food and environmental samples. Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium are common in human and animal faeces and Enterococci are regarded as secondary indicator organisms for faecal contamination in water.
The most recent addition to Lab M’s Enterococci range, Bile Aesculin Agar, is widely applicable for the isolation and presumptive identification of Enterococci/Group D Streptococci. The presence of bile salts in the medium inhibits the growth of Gram-positive organisms other than Enterococci or Group D Streptococci and aesculin hydrolysing organisms appear dark brown or black. This medium also enables the presumptive differentiation of the Klebsiella-Enterobacter-Serratia group from other Enterobacteriaceae.

The enumeration and presumptive identification of Enterococci from water is achieved using Lab M’s Slanetz and Bartley Medium, which may also be used as a spread plate for other sample types. Kanamycin Aesculin Azide Agar offers selective isolation and enumeration of Enterococci while Kanamycin Aesculin Azide Broth is an enrichment and isolation medium for Enterococci. Used with the most probable number technique Kanamycin Aesculin Azide broth enables the enumeration of Enterococci in food.
