44 A New Class of Pipette and Burette
In these tough economic times scientists are searching harder than ever for the best buys – products which represent real value for money. Scilabware Ltd have launched a new range of Pyrex® MBL®
pipettes and burettes that recognise this need and provide high quality volumetric glassware at extremely competitive prices.
Class A pipettes and burettes have now been changed to Class AS equivalents. This latter class is now widely adopted throughout the world and gives the user the benefit of faster run-out times and easier cleaning. Accuracy and compliance to relevant ISO and DIN standards remain unaltered.
Pyrex® and MBL® Class AS pipettes and burettes have also been re-engineered to reduce costs and
are also now offered at exceptionally competitive prices. Circle no. 132

Quality Economical Laboratory Monitoring
New Climate Control System
The Hiden Isochema XCS system provides users with a unique controlled climate for a range of academic and scientific applications. The XCS includes remote sensors in the sample environment, permitting direct feedback of changing conditions and high-accuracy response, allowing enhanced control of temperature, humidity, gas flow rate and pressure.
Data can be collected from up to 32 separate sensor inputs; ensuring complete information is gathered from experiments. A number of custom attachments are available for the XCS, which permit sample manipulation while maintaining atmospheric control and uninterrupted measurement.
Alternatively, the XCS can be coupled with existing systems (for example, XRD, NMR, IR/Raman) to provide ultimate control of in-situ experimental conditions. An optional integrated mass spectrometer extends the range of capabilities of the XCS, allowing continuous measurement of atmospheric composition and evolved gas analysis.
Hiden Isochema are able to tailor the XCS to many other individual applications. The standard base unit may be fitted with various optional additions, such as loading ports, additional probes, manipulation tools, gloves and any custom requirements to ensure accessibility, control and functionality as required.

Setting up and operating a comprehensive laboratory monitoring system is made easier and more economical with the new Titan range of interface substations from IKS, a new addition to their market-leading XiltriX®
registration,
monitoring and alarm system. Such systems can include hundreds of sensor inputs and alarm outputs – up to a thousand in some cases - and the new substations are designed to simplify system integration while improving reliability and reducing overall costs.
Parameters such as temperature, CO2 and oxygen concentration, pressure and humidity can all be monitored by
XiltriX sensors. The new substations can be used to connect either 4 Pt100 temperature sensors or 4 current-based sensor signals for other parameters. Up to 4 digital inputs to monitor events such as door opening can also be connected. 4 digital alarm output channels are also available. Flexible communication options offer real-time monitoring using hard- wired, network or wireless connectivity. The Titan substation even monitors the local power supply and gives an alarm in case of power failure, while continuing to function using its built-in battery back-up system. The new design is fully compatible with all existing XiltriX monitoring systems.
South African Research Organisation Joins RNAi Global Initiative
Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc announced that the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa has become the newest member of the RNAi Global initiative – an alliance of Thermo Fisher and leading international research centres. The CSIR, based in Pretoria, has several research domains and regional offices throughout South Africa. It is the first organisation in Africa to conduct whole-genome RNA-interference (RNAi) screening with small-interfering RNA (siRNA). Like all members of the RNAi Global Initiative, the CSIR is using Thermo Scientific Dharmacon siRNA collections in this work, specifically the siGENOME®
SMARTpool® Mouse Whole Genome siRNA Library and the ON-TARGETplus® SMARTpool Human Whole
Genome siRNA Library. These collections include reagents designed for each gene in the genome, enabling scientists to systematically block (silence) the effect of target genes and determine their role in disease or find potential therapeutic benefits of silencing them.
Dr Musa Mhlanga, principal investigator of the laboratory for gene expression and biophysics and research leader of the CSIR’s Synthetic Biology programme, will use the Dharmacon siRNA libraries to address broad areas of research, including the mapping of gene networks and the investigation of host-pathogen interactions for the major disease burdens in Africa, notably HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and, increasingly, cancer. The discovery and mapping of gene networks is an emerging research field, going beyond the identification of individual genes implicated in a disease to understanding the interplay of entire groups of genes that may be key nodes in these networks. This has major implications for many areas of biomedical research. Dr Mhlanga said: “We plan to use combinatorial approaches, knocking down multiple genes in a single cell. Our goal is to identify the groups of genes working together in different biological contexts, from growth and development to infectious and chronic diseases. We want to understand the key networks in these processes and how, for example, pathogens control and ‘engineer’ gene expression in their human hosts.”

Founded in 1973, Loba Chemie has grown into a customer- focused global manufacturer/supplier of over 3000 high quality lab reagents and ACS grade chemicals. Their facilities are ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14000:2004, OHSAS 18001:2007 certified with CRISIL Rating of SE-1A (Highest Performance Capability & High Financial Strength).
With a manufacturing facility of 150000ft2 and spread over New Monosized Silica Microspheres
Following the success of the 9 micron glass microsphere standard, Whitehouse Scientific has introduced a new range of Monosized silica microspheres from 10 microns down to 1.5 microns.
Using a highly specific microscope certification procedure, all the silica standards are traceable to NIST and NPL international standards of length. They are available in sets of 10 bottles each containing 0.2g of dry powder, either all the same size or as a mixed set as specified by the user. A certificate of analysis is enclosed. Applications of the silica microspheres include filter testing, spacing applications and as respiratory or drug delivery models for the pharmaceutical industry.

Han Weerdesteyn, XiltriX Product Manager at IKS, said: “A monitoring system based on these new Titan substations should appeal to every lab that has monitoring needs. The low price offers exceptional value for money, but makes no compromises on quality or stability. XiltriX has proved itself a life saver on many occasions. Its real time monitoring, flexible communication and alarm options and comprehensive data logging offer a complete monitoring and alarm solution for all laboratories.”
