SHOW REVIEW Leading Thermal Desorption Technology
Specialist analytical thermal desorption instrumentation manufacturer Markes International Ltd demonstrated its market-leading systems for thermal desorption (TD) at Pittcon. The new TD-100™ is the latest in a line of innovative and technologically advanced thermal desorption systems from the company.
Markes’ new TD-100 system is a universal analytical thermal desorption platform for up to 100 RFID-tagged or untagged tubes. Harnessing the field-proven and leading edge TD technology for which the company is renowned, TD-100 incorporates sample re-collection for repeat analysis, cryogen-free operation for reduced running costs, tag read/write capability for enhanced tube/sample tracking and compatibility with the widest possible range of TD applications.
The TD-100 will appeal to high-throughput laboratories involved in air monitoring (ambient, indoor or workplace), testing chemical emission levels from products (e.g. for compliance with construction products regulations or REACH), flavour & fragrance profiling, fugitive emissions testing, quality control of residual solvents, CW agent detection and forensic analysis. Both vapour-phase and material samples (solids, liquids, resins, emulsions) can be accommodated and compatible target analytes include ultra-lights, semi-volatiles and reactive species; at trace or high-level concentrations.

Biotage announced the further expansion of its successful family of products with the launch of Evolute WCX at Pittcon. “This is the second expansion of the EVOLUTE family of resin-based, solid-phase extraction products, demonstrating our continued commitment to delivering high-quality solutions to our customers,” said Scott Carr, Vice President of Commercial Operations for Biotage.
EVOLUTE WCX is a mixed-mode weak cation exchanger, developed for extraction of strongly basic analytes and quaternary amines from aqueous samples. These analytes are typically found in pesticides and provide analytical scientists with the ability to extract pesticides from diverse matrices, ranging from ground water to blood samples.
The resin-based sorbent is surface modified with well defined hydroxyl-functional oligomers, imparting excellent water wettability. An optimised combination of non-polar (hydrophobic), polar (hydrophilic) and cation exchange interactions allows efficient extraction of strongly basic analytes of wide ranging polarities and quaternary amines, allowing for up to 50% more efficient recoveries of pesticide residues. The non-polar/cation exchange dual retention mechanism allows the use of a rigorous interference regime, providing extremely clean extracts and reducing matrix effects associated with LC-MS/MS analysis.

Protein Technologies Inc is proud to announce the launch of its newest peptide synthesizer, the OVERTURE™ Robotic Peptide Library Synthesizer. The OVERTURE™ was designed to incorporate many unique features that have never before been seen on other units in the peptide library synthesiser market.
The OVERTURE™ can run syntheses from 0.005 to 24 mmol scales. It features 6 reaction blocks capable of holding 96 (10mL) or 24 (40 or 45mL) reaction vessels, 49 amino acid positions, 6 solvent bottle positions, variable-speed vortex mixing, automatic robotic arm calibration, and a full-colour chemical-resistant touchscreen. Amino acid deliveries are performed from individual dispensers, which do not require rinsing in between deliveries, saving the user money and time. These dispensers are capable of infinitely variable delivery volumes accurate to 50mL. The OVERTURE™’s flexible, easy- to-use software features easy sequence importing, automatic sequence placement, automatic library generation, automated cleaning routines and report and log file generation.
Compact IDA Lead Selenide & Lead Sulphide Detectors
Cal Sensors announced the launch of IDA (Integrated Detector Assembly) lead selenide and lead sulphide high-sensitivity infrared detectors with integrated electronics enclosed within a compact, hermetically sealed TO-8 package IDA detectors enhance measurement dynamic range, resulting in greater low signal detection capability, while reducing system costs and the overall sensor and peripheral electronics footprint by up to 50%. Covering the 1.0 to 5.5µm infrared region IDA detectors provide industry leading sensitivity of 1.5E10 Jones.
IDA detectors are ideally suited for a wide range of applications including industrial and medical gas analysis, auto and aviation emissions analysis, environmental monitoring, IR spectroscopy, thermal imaging and flame detection. The small package size and low power requirements also enable integration into portable analysis and measurement systems.
Housing the electronic drivers within the detector package enhances noise performance since the detector is as close as possible to the first stage of amplification. This enables greater low signal detection capability for sensing trace elements by improving dynamic range. In addition, to cost and footprint savings, IDA infrared detectors offer a hermetically sealed package. Thus, sensitive optical and electronic components are protected, even in harsh industrial environments, enhancing long term durability. IDA lead selenide (2.8 x 1010 cm Hz1/2 w-1 peak D) and lead sulfide (1.5 x 1011cm Hz1/2 w-1 peak D) detectors are available in both 1mm and 2mm square sizes. The detectors come with integrated electronics in an industry standard T0-8 package and are available with a lead-time of six to eight weeks.

Special features include the Safe-Response feature, which automatically drains and rinses the resin with solvent when an error occurs, as well as E-mail Notification that can send an email or a text message to a computer or cell phone with the status of a synthesis, for worry-free operation. Other features include a workstation utility, which allows syntheses to be created on a desktop computer, and then transferred to the OVERTURE™ with a USB stick. A unique door-opening mechanism saves bench space, and an optional solvent cabinet configuration is also available.

Getting the Necessary Data Management
New Software Platform for Spectroscopy and Scientific Imaging
Princeton Instruments is pleased to introduce LightField™, an all-new 64-bit data acquisition software platform designed for use in spectroscopy and scientific imaging applications. LightField provides comprehensive control of Princeton Instruments cameras and spectrometers via easy-to-use tools that help streamline experimental setup, data acquisition, and post processing.
LightField is an excellent solution for multi-user facilities as well as single-user labs. The platform remembers each user’s hardware and software configurations and tailors its own features accordingly, displaying all relevant tools via an intuitive graphical user interface. The platform’s capabilities can be extended even further with Princeton Instruments’ patent-pending IntelliCal™ package, the most precise wavelength calibration software available. The IntelliCal option provides up to 10x greater accuracy across the entire focal plane than competing routines. A new USB-powered Hg/Ne/Ar emission line source, available separately, works seamlessly with Princeton Instruments’ hardware and software to ensure the highest possible calibration accuracy.
LightField is ideal for applications such as optical imaging, raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, surface and materials analysis, combustion studies, and astronomy. Regardless of application, LightField offers truly remarkable region of interest (ROI) capabilities.
Users can create an ROI directly from a reference image, simultaneously view multiple ROI images/spectra, or view multiple instances of a single ROI at different magnifications. The LightField software platform is fully compatible with 64-bit Microsoft® Windows Vista® operating systems. A 64-bit, event-driven API is provided for programmers.
